The Thesis gives consideration to the origin and development of the Earthly Branches, their acceptance in the science in Myungri and their application to reasoning on destiny.
At first, the Earthly Branches are the means to record dates. The Earthly Branches, combining with the ten Celestial Stems, represented dates and each of the dates became a special day. The Earthly Branches combined with Yinyang and Five Elements, being assigned to seasons, directions and animals and being used in indicating time, month and year. Accepted in the science in Myungri, they became important causal factors of a system which reasons on the destiny of man.
Regarding the origin of the Earthly Branches, there are a variety of views in different texts including the view of the descent from the heaven, of Tianhuang, of Danao and of Fuxi. The development of the Earthly Branches was established by their combining with Yinyang and Five Elements and connecting with seasons and directions. They became the fiducial point of time, month and year, which made the foundation of the oriental calendar system.
The Earthly Branches symbolize the process of birth, prosperity and decline of all things in the universe according to the rise and fall function of Yinyang in the flow of seasonal time. The rise and fall of Yinyang and the symbol of Five Elements, as they were, were accepted in the Earthly Branches, becoming the basis of the reasoning on the destiny in the science of Myungri. The circulation of the twelve Earthly Branches was explained comparing to the process of man's birth, prosperity and decline. It was thought that man was also a part of nature and this cycle of nature was applied to the destiny of man. The birth, growth, prosperity and decline in Five Elements setteled down as Potae-theory, and the Four Pillars came to represent the root, sapling, flower and fruit in life. Here was the recognition of organic conjunction with nature and humanities which regarded universal nature as corresponding to human affairs.
The theory of the Earthly Branches in Myungri developed into Jijanggan-theroy, the relation between the Celestial Stems and the Earthly Branches and the interrelation of the Earthly Branches which are represented by Hab-Hyung-Choong-Hae. In Jijanggan-theory, it casuesd a very complicated Earthly Branches structure to be included in the Four Pillars that a Earthly Branch had several Celestial Stems within. According to Jijanggan, the relation with the Celestial Stems was determined, in accordance with which the concepts of Myungri such as Connected Root, Penetrate the Celestial Stems and the Principles of Frame were built up.
As the principle derived from the interrelation of the Earthly Branches like Hab-Hyung-Choong-Hae was followed by a number of conditions which couldn't be applied mechanically, it showed that Myungri is the studies which requires a higher level of investigating and accumulating of knowledge.
Through their interrelation and interaction settled down the concepts of Myungri such as Shingang, Shinyak, Shilryung, Deukryung, Shengbu, Jajo, Joonghwa etc. which are still used in modern Myungri. Made use of in interpretation, these theories were able to read the vicissitude and ups and downs in life. Besides they could explain numerous incidents and meanings in life, connecting with the circulation of destiny.
