As one of the most representative cultural phenomena of contemporary society, advertisements naturally display social issues and events and are created to increase interest and attraction in the consumer. The important components in making such advertisements regard the indu
ction of positive and emotional reaction of the viewer and having those remembered as long as possible.
Holbrook and Batra(1987) identified that attitude toward the ad and its emotional responses have effects toward attitude toward the brand.
If emotional responses are different, not only do they affect differently on the attitude towards the ad, but also indirectly the attitude towards the brand.
In order to formulate a positive attitude towards the ad in consumers, the ad’s creativity stands as important, and diverse ideas and strategies are being more and more often seen. As a means of effective expression of ad creativity, we often see ads parodying favorite films or pieces of familiar art. In such cases, we find ourselves curious about what effects would attitude towards such ads and its emotional responses would have on attitude towards brand.
In particular, as the latest player to introduce LTE service in Korea, KT(former Korea Telecom) facilitated the OST of Star Wars as Backg round music and also added Darth Vader’s unique breathing sound. By producing a movie parody with considerably an over exaggerating atmo sphere, they advertised their brand called Olleh LTE WARP. Respectively, the methodology of this study regards the following: 1) How does the perceptive reaction effect the content toward the ad in the Olleh LTE WARP mobile telecommunications movie-parody advertisement? 2)How does the perceptive reaction effect the execution towards the ad in the Olleh LTE WARP mobile telecommunications movie-parody advertisement? 3) How does the emotional reaction affect the attitude towards the ad in the Olleh LTE WARP mobile telecommunications movie-parody advertisement? 4) How does the attitude towards the ad aff
ect the attitude towards the brand in the Olleh LTE WARP mobile telecommunications movie-parody advertisement?
Subjects of the survey consisted of 196 persons of both genders living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province area, a nd the advertisement used in the survey were from two episodes: “Olleh LTE WARP: Between Olleh members” and “Olleh LTE WARP: Subway.” Images and a storyboard of the two episodes were displayed to provide as an experimen tal visual stimulus, and using a 5-point Lickertis scale, 4 questions on demographics in addition to a total of 24 questions to identify differences and relationships on perceptive reaction, characteristics of perceptive reaction(repetitive effect, familiarity, unexpectancy, creativity), emo
tional reaction, attitude towards the ad, and attitude towards the brand, were created for the participants to answer.
The collected data was analyzed using a SPSS WIN 18.0 program. As for analytical methods, frequencies and percentages were drawn to identify demographic characteristics. Then a correlation analysis was administered on: perceptive reaction from the ad, support argument or counter-argument on content and execution, emotional reaction, attitude towards the ad, and attitude towards the brand. To identify the effects perceptive reaction has on support arguments and counter-arguments
on content and execution, multiple regression analysis was used; and to analyze emotional reaction’s effects upon attitude towards the ad/brand, in addition to the effects attitude towards the ad has on attitude towards the brand, a simple regression analysis was facilitated.
The results of the survey are as follows.
First, in the movie parody advertisement among perceptive reactions, the creativity characteristics had most effect upon support on contents, and it was identified that the more familiarity, the more decreasing effect it had on counter arguments. Secondly, in the movie parody advertisement, among perceptive reactions we were able to find that unex pectancy was the property most effective on support arguments and counter-arguments regarding content. Third, in the movie parody advertisement, the attitude towards the ad and the attitude towards the brand had better results when emotional reactions were higher. Finally, in the movie parody advertisement, attitude towards the brand had positive results as the attitude towards the ad had high input. According to this survey, the Olleh LTE WARP movie parody advertisement gained p
ositive results in terms of forming both attitudes.
As a result, Holbrook and Batra’s assertion that the attitude towards the brand would gain favor if the attitude towards the ad has positive results, seems to be well supported and proven in the study.
