The purpose of this thesis is to establish the significance on the Kyeonggiche-ga(景幾體歌) of Buddism from the viewpoint of Korean classical poetry, search for Buddhist scriptures and adopt aspects and poetic imagery in the Kyeonggiche-ga of Buddism which was created during the Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty Period. Kyeonggiche-ga was a popular genre from Hanrimbyeolgok(翰林別曲) in the middle of the Goryeo(高麗) Dynasty for the high officials in the late of Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty Period.
However, Buddhist monks started to create Pokyomoonhak(布敎文學) to officials since the movement of Buddhist suppression by officials in the early period of the Joseon Dynasty. The prominent example of that movement was five songs’ Kyeonggiche-ga of Buddism, so the monks could maintain their existence.
The genre of Kyeonggiche-ga is essentially related to the didactic. Pokyomoonhak is most strongly expressed by the didactic because they had to teach their doctrines. The genre of Kyeonggiche-ga was more appropriate to use for their doctrines.
Thus, Buddhist monks in the early period of the Joseon Dynasty created literature for the high officials to preach their doctrines. There were a lot of cases of Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga directly embracing Buddhist thoughts and ideals.
Especially, Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga had many aspects both directly and indirectly not only regarding ‘Awakening of pure-land by heart(唯心淨土)’ and ‘Seon(禪’)-thought in the middle period of the Goryeo Dynasty, but also ‘Chungtosambu-kyung(淨土三部經)’ in the early period of the Joseon Dynasty.
However, Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga went through with the process of poetic imagery by the writer’s intention. For example, Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga used figures of speech for the propagation of Buddhism, actively accepts Kyeonggiche-ga’s meter and repeatedly expresses Buddhist scriptures by means of abbreviation.
Therefore, Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga constituted the poetic imagery. Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga was significant in Korean classical poetry because it was created with the intention for propagation of Buddhism with emphasis for the didactic and influence for Buddhist Gasa(佛敎歌辭).
Finally, the creation of Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga accepted Buddhist scriptures or thought according to propagation’s intention and expressed the writer’s intention through the poetic imagery. These features were imparted to Buddhist monks who had the intention of propagating their doctrines. Buddhist Kyeonggiche-ga had unique characters in Kyeonggiche-ga and it will reveal its characteristics clearly comparing with other Kyeonggiche-ga.
