The purpose of this study is to carry out the group art therapy using flow, targeting high school students, whereby it investigates the effects of the therapy on the students' learning motivation and academic self-efficacy.
The subjects of the study were 12 sophomores of a high school in D city, Gyeonggi-do; and 6 of them were placed to the experimental group, and 6 to the control group. The period of the study was from January 2012 to April, 2012; and a total of 14 sessions of the group art therapy program were performed, for about 120 minutes each. As for the place of the therapy, the room for student division, which was bright, silent, and spacious, within Church A was used. As for measurement tools, the School Learning Motivation Scale (Kim Yong-rae, 2000), the Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (Kim A-yeong and Park In-yeong, 2001), and KSD tests were employed before and after the test period in order to evaluate learning motivation and academic self-efficacy. For quantitative analysis, the SPSS WIN 12.0 program was used. And also, for qualitative analysis, changes by the step of the group art therapy program were analyzed.
The findings of this study may be summarized as follows:
First, it was found that the group art therapy using flow had positive effects on the improvement of students' learning motivation. The learning motivation scores of the overall students of the experimental group, who participated in the group art therapy, showed that the post-test scores improved 19.17 points, compared with the pre-test scores; they, however, showed no statistically significant difference.
Second, the group art therapy using flow was effective for enhancing the high-school students' academic self-efficacy. The overall academic self-efficacy scores of the experimental group participating in the group art therapy improved in the post-test, compared to the pre-test; and the increase was statistically significant at the level of p<.05.
As in the above findings, it was shown that the group art therapy program had positive effects on the improvement of high school students' learning motivation, and was effective for the enhancement of academic self-efficacy.
It is deemed that this study, which performed the group art therapy using flow, targeting high school students with low learning motivation and academic self-efficacy, contributed to clarifying their learning goals, stimulating their internal motives to learn, and forming their positive self-concept through enhanced self-confidence. It is to be wished that the art therapy program using flow is provided to high school students, who are in a fierce competition for the entrance examination, so that it may help them perform effective learning, shaking off their anxiety and feeling the pleasure of learning flow and a sense of achievement.
