The purpose of this research is to provide basic data necessary for the mental heath of teenagers by conducting analysis on the relations of stress, depression, and the sense of self-esteem of the middle and high school students.
Based on the above-mentioned research procedures, the results of this research are as follows.
First, the degree of stress of the middle and high school students on the whole was found to be above average with 3.25.
The average of their thoughts about family, friends, and teachers were also found to be above average and slightly positive. The average score of the thoughts about themselves was found to be on the average level with 2.99 and the degree pf depression was also found to be on the average level with 2.33. The trend of overall stress, the degree of depression, and the sense of self-esteem of the middle and high school students, who were the subjects of this research, was found to be relatively favorable.
Second, the overall stress and the thoughts about themselves of the middle and high school students were found to be negatively correlated, though minimal. Negative thoughts about themselves can be presupposed to cause more stress in general. Particularly, the negative thoughts about family appear to cause more family-related factors stress, and the negative thoughts about teachers appear to cause more teacher-related factors stress.
Third, the depression and the stress of middle and high school students were found to be positively correlated, though minimal. In other words, it can be interpreted that the higher the stress, the higher the degree of depression. The fact that stress factors related to parents, brothers and sisters of the middle and high school students are highly correlated gives suggestions about the importance of desirable relationships among families.
Fourth, thoughts about friends and stress of the middle school students were found to be correlated with each other. The more stress middle school students experience about parents, brothers and sisters, and teachers, the more positively they were found to think about their friends, and this can be interpreted as they rely greatly on relationships with friends in their daily living.
Fifth, in the high school students, the thoughts about themselves and stress factors were found to be negatively correlated. The thoughts about themselves in high school students are interpreted as more correlated with stress than in middle school students. This implies that the higher the ages of teenagers, the more closely the sense of self-esteem and stress are correlated.
As above, correlations among stress, depression, and the sense of self-esteem of the middle and high school students were examined. Based on the results of this research, the suggestions to be made for desirable growth and mental health of teenagers are as follows.
First, based on the results of this research that stress, depression, and the sense of self-esteem of middle and high school students were correlated with one another, the schools need to establish programs that they can provide for teenagers in order to form the positive and desirable sense of self-esteem.
Second, the research results showed that the factors that have effects on the stress, depression, and the sense of self esteem of the middle and high school students were, particularly, parents, brothers and sisters, so the importance of family should be reemphasized for healthy growth of teenagers and healthy and desirable roles that parents play should be reconsidered.
Finally, since there are limitations for the results of this research to be generalized since the subjects of this research were limited to the students of the middle and high schools located in the northern part of Gyeonggi-do, so continuous follow-up researches for verifications need to be conducted on a greater number of students.
