Unlike the past, the main reason for quitting school or not having a successful school life is not currently related to the financial reason but to being unable to get used to school life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Influence on vocational high school students' adaptation to school life by academic accomplishment and volitional control.
Research Question 1; What influence does academic accomplishment have on school life?
Research Question 2; What influence does volitional control have on school life?
To answer the above questions, 450 freshman students of one vocational high school in Gyunggi province have been sampled and examined. The tools that have been used are volitional control scale, school life adaptation scale, and academic accomplishment scale. The data were evaluated by SPSS/WIN (18.0) program. All hypotheses for analysis were based on t and f inspections below the attention standard p<.05. The methods of Simple Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis have been used to verify detailed hypotheses of research.
The results of study are as follows;
First, in relations between achievement goal and volitional control of vocational high school students, subordinate factors of achievement goal wield a relative influence on volitional control, and targets for proficiency and approximation have static relations with efficiency improvement, interest boost and necessity emphasis. In addition, avoidance target is related statically with necessity emphasis.
Second, in the respect of independent influence by subordinate factors of achievement goal on school life adaptation, this study shows that the higher targets of proficiency and approximation are, the better is students' adaptation to all the school life such as relationship with teachers and friends, academic activity, rule obedience, and school events. On the contrary, the higher the avoidance target is, the worse the adaptation to school life is. Accordingly, this result confirms the fact that targets of proficiency and approximation inflict influence on the school life adaptation of students.
Third, the course of volitional control has a meaningful static co-relation with students' adaptation to school life so that students with higher volitional control enjoy higher adaptation to school life. This proves the fact that a student with a higher academic volition control can make a better adaptation to school life.
This study has developed the scale of volitional control as subordinate factor by dividing volitional control into motivation control and emotion control. In addition, volition has been divided into the motivation control including efficiency improvement, interest boost and necessity emphasis and the emotion control including sentiment inspiration, normality resumption and caution induction.
As a result of forecasting each factor's relation with school life adaptation, efficiency improvement and necessity emphasis that are subordinate factors of volitional control have turned out to be variables wielding big influence on school life adaptation. However, the interest boost is not a meaningful variable.
Additionally, among the subordinate factors of motivation control emotion inspiration and normality resumption have a very meaningful relationship with school life adaptation, but caution induction has a meaningless relationship.
These results of the study propose that a teacher should inspire students in their adolescence the motivation of achievement goal and induce them to increase the ability of volitional control, which helps them enjoy their school lives. For this, much more time and efforts should be placed on the research and development of programs enabling students to set achievement goals and to grow academic volitional control for successful adaptation to school life.
Key words: accomplishment goal(proficiency target, performance target, performance avoidance target), volitional control (cognition control, emotion control, behavior control, environment control), adaptation to school life
