대학생의 완벽주의와 도움추구태도와의 관계에서 정서표현억제의 매개효과 = Suppression of emotional expression as a mediator in the relationship between perfectionism and help seeking attitude

국문 초록 (Abstract)

심리적 문제를 해결하는 데 있어 상담 및 심리치료가 효과적인 방법이라는 것이 입증되었음에도 불구하고, 많은 사람들이 상담가나 심리 전문가의 도움을 구하는 것을 어려워하여 적절한 개입 시기를 놓치거나 겪고 있는 문제를 더 악화시키고 있다. 따라서 잠재적 내담자가 전문적 도움추구에 대해 가지고 있는 부정적 태도의 원인을 이해하여 그들이 적절한 도움을 받을 수 있도록 돕는 것이 중요하며, 이를 위해서는 전문적 도움추구에 영향을 미치는 요인들에 대한 연구가 반드시 필요하다.
한편 완벽주의는 불가능한 목표와 높은 기준을 세우고 그것을 성취하기 위해서 끊임없이 스스로를 압박하는 것으로, 존재하지 않는 완벽에 대한 추구는 결국 실패로 귀결되기 때문에 상당한 심리적 고통을 수반하게 된다.
완벽주의 뿐만 아니라 정서표현억제 역시 개인의 심리적 적응에 영향을 미치는 주요한 변인이다. 정서표현을 억제한다는 것은 표현하려는 욕구를 의식적으로 억누르는 것을 의미하는데, 이러한 정서표현의 억제는 다양한 심리적 문제를 야기하게 된다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 완벽주의를 적응적 완벽주의와 부적응적 완벽주의로 구분하여 완벽주의, 정서표현억제, 도움추구태도 간의 관계를 확인하고 완벽주의 및 정서표현억제가 도움추구태도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다.
이러한 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 설정한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.

연구문제 1. 완벽주의, 정서표현억제, 도움추구태도는 어떠한 관계가 있는가?
연구문제 2. 완벽주의와 정서표현억제가 도움추구태도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가?
연구문제 3. 완벽주의와 도움추구태도의 관계에서 정서표현억제가 매개하는가?

위 연구문제를 확인하기 위해 대학생 312명을 대상으로 완벽주의, 정서표현억제, 도움추구태도를 측정하여 분석하였으며, 그 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 세 변인 간의 관계를 살펴본 결과, 완벽주의의 두 가지 하위차원 중 적응적 완벽주의는 도움추구태도와 유의한 상관을 보이지 않았으나, 부적응적 완벽주의는 도움추구태도와 부적상관이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 정서표현억제와 도움추구태도는 부적상관이 있었으며, 적응적 완벽주의와 부적응적 완벽주의 모두 정서표현억제와 정적상관이 있었다.
둘째, 완벽주의와 정서표현억제가 도움추구태도에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과, 적응적 완벽주의는 도움추구태도에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았으나, 부적응적 완벽주의는 도움추구태도에 부적으로 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 정서표현억제 역시 도움추구태도에 부적으로 유의한 영향력을 갖는 것으로 나타났다.
셋째, 완벽주의와 도움추구태도의 관계에서 정서표현억제가 매개하는지 살펴본 결과, 정서표현억제가 도움추구태도에 미치는 효과를 통계적으로 배제하였을 때 부적응적 완벽주의가 도움추구태도에 직접적으로 미치는 효과는 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 정서표현억제가 부적응적 완벽주의와 도움추구태도 사이를 완전히 매개함을 의미한다.
이상의 연구결과를 통해 본 연구가 갖는 의의는 다음과 같다. 지금까지의 선행연구들을 통해 완벽주의가 도움추구태도에 부정적인 영향을 미친다는 것은 검증되었으나, 구체적으로 어떠한 과정을 통해 영향을 미치는지는 확인할 수 없었다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 부적응적 완벽주의와 도움추구태도의 관계에서 정서표현억제가 매개역할을 함을 검증함으로써, 부적응적 완벽주의 성향이 높은 사람들은 정서표현을 억제하려는 성향이 강하기 때문에 결과적으로 상담이나 심리치료와 같은 전문적 도움을 요청하는 것에 대해 부정적인 태도를 갖게 된다는 것을 확인하였다는 데에 그 의의가 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to identify the relations among the perfectionism, the suppression of emotional expression, and the help seeking attitude. This study also investigated the effects of the perfectionism and the suppression of emotional expression on the help seeking attitude. Furthermore, this study aimed to verify the mediating effect of the suppression of emotional expression in the relationship between the perfectionism and the help seeking attitude.
To accomplish the purpose of this study, the survey research was conducted to 312 university students.
Main results of this study were as follows.
First, the maladaptive perfectionism was negatively correlated with the help seeking attitude, whereas the adaptive perfectionism had no correlation with the help seeking attitude. The suppression of emotional expression had negative correlation with the help seeking attitude. Both the adaptive perfectionism and the maladaptive perfectionism had positive correlations with the suppression of emotional expression.
Second, the help seeking attitude was negatively affected by the maladaptive perfectionism, whereas not affected by the adaptive perfectionism. The help seeking attitude was also negatively affected by suppression of emotional expression.
Third, the maladaptive perfectionism had no effect on the help seeking attitude when the effect of the suppression of emotional expression on the help seeking attitude was controlled. It means that the suppression of emotional expression mediated the relationship between the maladaptive perfectionism and the help seeking attitude.
The meaning of this study was to verify the mediating effect of the suppression of emotional expression in the relationship between the perfectionism and the help seeking attitude. The results of this study indicated that maladaptive perfectionists had negative attitude toward asking for help from counselors or psychotherapists because they intensely tried to suppress emotional expression.
