The aim of this study is to develop the assessment which help to understand and assess the creative -character leadership in young children. Especially, this study chooses one of the creative-character leadership, patience, as a main topic and develops its rubric with a case study.
The concrete research issues are as follows.
First, what composes the rubric to assess patience, one of the creative-character leadership of young children?
Second, do the developed rubrics of creative-character leadership have validity?
The results of rubric development from this study are as follows:
First, this research selects ‘patience’, one of the creative- character leadership and practices ‘stop-think-do’ program with assessment category from prior studies. To present assessment category reflecting actual creative-character leadership behavior, ‘marshmallow study’ is performed. The subjects of marshmallow study are 104 children from 3-year-old to 5-year-old in 4 kindergartens placing in Seoul and Kyunggido. The recorded video is transcribed and content analysis is performed.
The result of the analysis is like this: During STOP, children put down the marshmallow when their friends told them not to eat or they did not eat by themselves or their friends help them not to eat.
THINK step can be divided into ‘perceiving’ and ‘finding strategy’ behavior. ‘Perceiving’ includes exploring marshmallow, talking about desire of eating, waiting, resolving not to eat, enduring the desire with friends, and expecting results or rewards. ‘Finding strategy’ can be split up two kinds of behavior, ‘turning attention’ and ‘imagining’. ‘Turning attention’ shows behaviors like simply turning attention to surrounding, counting and singing. ‘Imagining’ includes various imagination or play.
During DO, some young children eventually ate marshmallow a little bit, and others endured without eating until their teacher came back or helped their friends not to eat. Through this process, children performed self-assessment and peer-assessment.
Second, this study helps to subdivide and modify the assessment category based on the result of marshmallow study. Especially, this research divides THINK into three parts, ‘perceiving’, ‘finding strategy-turning attention’ and ‘imagining’. Based on this result, this study assorts assessment level and describes the characters of each level, and finally makes the rubrics. In the end, teachers verifies content validity and secondly, specialists in this filed verifies content validity of developed rubrics.
This study has significance as follows;
Firstly, theoretically, this study regards creativity, character and leadership as an integrated concept and investigates actual and practical characters of creative leadership of young children.
Secondly, methodologically, this study conducts qualitative analysis of children’ behavior and finds the characteristics of children’s behavior. Moreover, this study finds that children do self-assessment and peer-assessment and establishes the development process of rubrics based on the children’s performance.
Thirdly, practically, this study develops a rubric based on activity, which is easy to use, so it helps teachers to develop the rubric based on the class activities and to establish the education direction by assessing and knowing children’s level.
Finally, this study provides children-related researchers a chance to develop creative-characters leadership program and enlarges the boundary of rubric for children.
