The purpose of this study was to investigate the adaptational process and to Korean culture and its reality of children from multi-cultural families through Korean traditional Sogo dance program. Literature review and interview were conducted together for the study, and 9 students including 6 girls and 3 boys from multi-cultural families who are in 4 or 5th grade at J elementary school located in Guro-gu, Seoul were selected as research participants.
The followings were the result of this study.
First, by studying the essentials and meanings of Sogo dance experience program, we realized that children from multi-cultural families who participated in the research not only showed interest in Korean culture after experiencing the program but also found joy in school life. That is, most students have positive perception towards Korean traditional Sogo dance.
Second, through the analysis of adaptation process to Korean culture, the Sogo dance experience is verified as an essential education program for the multi-cultural society since, beyond as a movement education. It enables cultural communication and is a proper medium to understand and communicate with a comprehensive culture through the dance.
Third, the analysis of reality of adaptation to Korean culture showed that the Sogo dance program is an opportunity for the children to recognize Korean society again after learning the value of Korean traditional dance as a heritage for cultural transmission. Also, it was verified that the program would be effective for the children to recognize the concept of tradition, our heritage, the value of traditional culture, their presences as Koreans, and to inspire national pride.
