The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Problem-Solving Ability and Attributional Style on Suicidal Ideation in Adolescent.
Identifying the cause of Suicidal Ideation which is predictive variable of suicide attempt as a result of this study, can provide the suicide prevention program and cognitive re-train education with the rapidly increasing recent issues of the suicidal problems in Adolescent.
The Predefined questions aligned to the objective of this study are as follows.
First, how do Problem-Solving Ability, Attributional Style and Suicidal Ideation in Adolescent are related?
Second, how do Problem-Solving Ability and Attributional Style influence on Suicidal Ideation in Adolescent?
For accomplishing the study, I surveyed with 437 students (1,2,3 grade) in high school located in Seoul and Gyeonggi. Participants consisted of 236 male students(54.0%) and 201 female students (46.0%).
The data is analyzed by using the SPSS 18.0 Program's technical statistics, correlation and multiple regression analysis.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, Problem-Solving Ability, Attributional Style and Suicidal Ideation showed the static correlations. Among them, problem solving confidence, approach-avoidance style and personal control were investigated and they showed static negative correlations on suicidal ideation. Internal Attribution showed static negative correlations and external attribution showed static positive correlations on suicidal ideation.
In Problem-Solving Ability confidence, approach-avoidance showed static positive correlations on Internal Attribution but personal control doesn't show static correlations. On the other hand, confidence, approach-avoidance and personal control showed negative correlations on external attribution. This suggests that Problem-Solving Ability, Attributional Style is closely related variables on Suicidal Ideation.
Second, it is found that Problem-Solving Ability and internal attribution have negative influence on suicidal ideation and external attribution have positive influence on suicidal ideation. Among problem-Solving Ability, confidence and personal control have negative impact on suicidal ideation but approach-avoidance have no effect on suicidal ideation.
In conclusion, Problem-Solving Ability and Attributional Style are related with Suicidal Ideation. Confidence, self-control and internal attribution have significant impact on internal attribution. That is, it is predicted that certain prevention program which provide confidence and self-control can be effective tool for preventing teenage suicide.
This research is significant in the sense that it clarifies the correlations between Problem-Solving Ability and Attributional Style, and suicidal ideation in Adolescent.
