신구상(nouvelle figuration) 운동을 통해 본 1960-70년대 프랑스 미술의 저항의식

The objective of this study is to investigate a sense of resistance appeared in the 1960s-1970s French Art through Nouvelle Figuration. France in the time Nouvelle Figuration emerged was confused politically due to the war with the colonial states as well as the Cold war, anxiety in everyday was aggravated by visualizing Recession and liberal consumption gap in life. In the process, a radical social contradictions and conflicts suppressed before and after started to appeal, a radical social revolution like 68 Student movement might be required. Nouvelle Figuration emerged in the time showed the works that had reflected private sense of resistance directly in that time of France.
The works implemented by Nouvelle Figuration, it can be seen to be important in that accepted the images of the mass media developed rapidly at that time, the screen like graphics was the most typical formative features. Despite this form was very similar to Pop art or Hyperréalisme in the US to draw attention in Europe the works of Nouvelle Figuration revealed unique aspects of the resistance due to the effect on French society and the art world.
Therefore, this paper was to attempt to analyze it around working methods that Nouvelle Figuration painters tried most frequently. Nouvelle Figuration painters tried to verify the existence of the target that they wanted to accuse by introducing photographic images to encounter in the real world frequently in the works, to meet the reality at that time more vividly through photorealistic depiction. In addition, they tried to approach to problems emerged in a consumer society by introducing the brand image to represent the consumer market expanded in 1960s and its culture and reality directly. Thus, working way using the images bearing reality can be seen to present social reality Nouvelle Figuration painters wanted to reform for the visitors directly.
Meanwhile Nouvelle Figuration painters accepted rhetoric of satire used in a way that criticized power structure. They implemented the works to grid at power structure and its situation using the way of unique humorous expression that cartoon images had and the symbolism that cartoon characters had. In addition, they used playful elements caused in the process by parodying the works considered to be important in art history. In addition, they criticized real politics and power structure directly through the way to caricaturing the actual politicians's image.
This paper was to examine the traces to accept the type of political posters so that Nouvelle Figuration's works delivered political claims effectively. This attempt was expressed through the way to use the faces and characters of revolutionaries who founded particularly political ideology. In addiction, Nouvelle Figuration painters made grater number of people to inspire a sense of resistance by installing the works in the usual places as well as the visitors to experience a real society indirectly through installed works that visitors participated in themselves.
Through such discussions, this paper was to check that a sense of resistance that Nouvelle Figuration implemented was a key driver flowing round realism in French Art in the 1960s-1970s, ultimately art was found to have the same meaning to make the society that guarantees freedom as human being based on the belief that art ant communication with society directly.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 신구상(Nouvelle Figuration) 운동을 통해 1960-70년대 프랑스 미술에 나타난 저항의식에 대해 고찰하고자 한 연구이다. 신구상 운동이 등장했던 시기의 프랑스는 냉전을 비롯하여 식민지 국가들과의 전쟁 등으로 인해 정치적으로 혼란스러운 시기였으며, 경기 침체와 소비주의적 삶의 격차가 가시화 되면서 일상에서는 불안감이 가중되기도 하였다. 이 과정에서 전 후부터 억제되어 왔던 사회적 모순과 갈등의 골이 드러나기 시작하면서, 68학생운동과 같은 급진적인 사회적 변혁이 요구되기도 하였다. 이러한 시대에 등장했던 신구상 운동은 당시 프랑스 사회에서 만개했던 저항의식을 직접적으로 반영하는 작업들을 보여주었다.
신구상 운동을 통해 구현된 작업들은 당시 급속도로 발달했던 대중매체의 이미지를 수용했다는 점에서 중요하다고 볼 수 있는데, 사진과 만화, 잡지 등의 대중매체 이미지를 이용한 그래픽과 같은 화면들이 가장 대표적인 조형적 특징이라 볼 수 있다. 이러한 양식이 당시 유럽에서 이목을 집중시켰던 미국의 팝 아트(Pop art)나 하이퍼 리얼리즘(Hyperréalisme)과 매우 유사함에도 불구하고, 신구상 운동의 작업들은 당시 프랑스 사회와 미술계의 영향으로 인해 특유의 저항적인 양상을 드러냈다.
따라서 본 논문은 신구상 작가들이 가장 빈번하게 시도했던 작업 방식들을 중심으로 분석을 시도하였다. 신구상 작가들은 현실세계에서 흔히 접할 수 있는 사진 이미지를 작품에 도입함으로써 자신들이 고발하고자 하는 대상의 실재를 증명하고자 하였으며, 극사실적 묘사를 통해 당시 사회의 현실을 보다 생생하게 조우할 수 있도록 하였다. 또한 그들은 1960년대에 급격히 팽창했던 소비 시장과 그에 따른 문화 및 현실을 대변하는 상표 이미지를 직접 작품에 도입함으로써 소비사회에서 대두된 문제들에 접근하고자 하였다. 따라서 현실성을 간직한 이미지들을 활용한 작업 방식은 신구상 작가들이 개혁하고자 했던 사회의 현실을 관람자들에게 직접적으로 제시하는 역할을 하였다고 볼 수 있다.
한편 신구상 작가들은 권력층을 비판하는 방식으로 자주 활용 되어 왔던 풍자의 수사법을 수용하였다. 그들은 만화 이미지가 지니는 특유의 익살적 표현방식과 만화 캐릭터가 지니는 상징성 등을 이용하여 당시의 권력층과 세태를 조롱하는 작업들을 구현하였다. 또한 미술사에서 중요하게 여겨지는 작품들을 패러디하면서 그 과정에서 유발되는 유희적 요소를 활용하였다. 이와 더불어 실제 정치인 이미지를 희화화하는 방식을 통해 직접적으로 현실정치와 지배 권력에 비판을 가하기도 하였다.
본 논문은 신구상 운동의 작업들이 정치적 주장을 보다 효과적으로 전달하기 위하여 정치 포스터의 형식을 수용한 흔적들을 살펴보았으며, 이러한 시도는 색을 비롯하여 특정 정치사상을 창시했던 혁명가들의 얼굴이나 문자를 활용하는 방식을 통해 발현되었다. 또한 신구상 작가들은 관람자들이 직접 참여할 수 있는 설치작품들을 통해 현실사회를 간접적으로나마 체험할 수 있도록 하였을 뿐만 아니라 일상적인 장소로 나아가 작업들을 설치함으로써 보다 많은 수의 사람들이 저항의식을 고취할 수 있도록 이끌었다.
이와 같은 논의를 통해, 본 논문은 신구상 운동이 구현하는 저항의식이 1960-70년대 프랑스 미술의 리얼리즘적 흐름에 회류하는 주요한 동인임을 확인하였으며, 궁극적으로는 미술이 사회와 직접 소통할 수 있다는 믿음을 기반으로, 인간으로서의 자유가 보장된 사회를 만드는 데에 뜻을 같이 하였음을 확인할 수 있다.
