This research investigates consciousness of students in Pochoen about multicultural family as well as social distance. The purpose of this study is to provide preliminary data for multicultural education at middle school.
Suggested subjects for inquiry are as follows:
First, how well middle school students understand multiculturalism? Would some factors such as gender, grade, home environment be related to their awareness?
Second, what about middle school students' stereotype of idea about multiculturalism in the cognitive and emotional ways? Are they influenced by some factors like gender, grade, and home environment?
Third, what about physical/personal distance of middle school students? Is it related to gender, grade, and home environment?
In order to accomplish this purpose, I conducted surveys on 449 middle school students in Pocheon.
Research tools I used are what I modified from cultural diversity index by Jeong Jin-hwan(2011)(Item 9~15) which is from Hwang-jeong mi(2007)'s research tool to measure general teenagers' consciousness toward multiculturalism. In addition, I integrated this with modified multiculturalism awareness tool by Kim Myung-hee(2009)(Item 6~26) and I used two different tools so as to apprehend fixed idea.
I used '11-adjectives Tool(Cognitive Stereotype)' modified by Lee Hah-ryung(2007) from 'CRF:Counselor Rating Form' which Corrigan and Schumidt(1993) had developed. In order to check 'Sensible Stereotype', I used '12-adjectives Tool(Cognitive Stereotype)' by Lee Hah-ryung, which had modified Kim Hye-sook(1999)'s 13-index tool. To check social distance, I complemented Kim Mi-ok(2003)s' and I measured physical and personal distance each.
Statistics program, SPSS/WIN(ver.19.0) was used for data processing: average, T-test, variance analysis,
The results I got from this research are as follows:
First, students generally tend to accept multiculturalism quite well. This tendency doesn't show any meaningful relationship with demographic characteristics(gender, grade, family type, parents' academic ability/jobs, the standard of living) in the statistic way.
Second, they also show intermediate-level acceptance toward stereotype of ideas for teenagers in multicultural families. Male students, however, show rather strong tendency comparing to female students. Other demographic characteristics(gender, grade, family type, parents' academic ability/jobs, the standard of living) don't seem to have any significant relations.
Third, they show intermediate-level acceptance toward social distance as well. Students of high stand show higher level of acceptance. Other demographic characteristics(gender, grade, family type, parents' academic ability/jobs, the standard of living) don't seem to have any significant relations, either.
Conclusions from the results above can be drawn are as follows:
First, it is necessary to widen the range of research region.
Second, it is also needed to reduce the range of research items to one that makes us observe detailed data.
Third, diversity of class. We are asked to check differences between classes.
Fourth, it would be recommendable to examine meaningful changes about attitude after multicultural education.
