Abstract
With the aim of raising learners' awareness of the Korean language, this study showcases the method of Korean nuance comprehension education via transformation of poetic text. As for Korean language education, the study is based on the premise that the more advanced learners become, the more their Korean ability depend on linguistic awareness. Language awareness can be defined as linguistic sensibility from linguistic, practical, and socio-cultural perspectives, meta-linguistic competence in linguistic application, and capability of linguistic culture for linguistic activity. Such language awareness can represent linguistic capacity required of self-directed and active learners.
Until recently, Korean language education has been usually grounded upon function-oriented or skill-oriented educational contents and materials from the linguistic standpoint. In Korean language education, such approach cannot generate dramatic educational effects on linguistic development of learners, particularly advanced learners. This is because learners have insufficient awareness about the language itself and application hereof due to their partial knowledge and technical execution of the language in terms of lexical, grammatical, and textual education. In case of educational materials, textual genres and types are confined to specific text aimed at information delivery and persuasion. Notwithstanding educational effects solely attributable to such educational materials, functional education through these materials poses the risk of arousing mechanical and typical activities from learners, particularly those at the advanced level. With the awakening of such educational reality, this study proposes utilizing context-based, content-based poetic text for educational contents and materials from the integrated perspective of linguistics and literature. On the part of educational methods, such approach is grounded upon self-regulated reading and writing activities from the integrated perspective of linguistic functions to galvanize learners into active and autonomous linguistic learning and activity.
Premised upon the aforesaid educational viewpoint, this study explores educational contents, materials, and methods which enable learners to comprehend Korean nuances through autonomous transformation of poetic text. It focuses on the interpretative process of poetic text by learners rather than their interpretative outcome. Based upon similarity and difference in nuances between the original text and the transformed text in terms of lexicon, morph, syntax, and discourse, this study is specifically geared towards harnessing the poetic text for learners' autonomous nuance comprehension following adjustment of semantic nuances through contextual interpretation.
This study primarily examines such pattern of nuance comprehension through transformation of poetic text in terms of lexicon, morph, syntax, and discourse. Pursuant to 'poetic grammar'—a unique linguistic system inherent in the poetic text, learners display the pattern of textual transformation across lexicon, morph, syntax, and discourse which is centered upon figure—a deviant device for linguistic form and meaning on the axis of selection and the axis of combination. Specifically, learners focus on similarity of feelings in nuances as a replacement for lexicon, compare morphic transformation with difference in tones, focus on intentions through syntactic bonding, and comprehensively organize nuances in terms of discourse. In this process, they can understand nuances through replacement, conversion, bonding, and organization of feelings, tones, and intentions.
Meanwhile, this study inductively seeks educational methods based upon such pattern of nuance comprehension through autonomous transformation of poetic text by learners. The process of nuance comprehension can be largely divided into the following stages: nuance perception, nuance conversion, and nuance integration. With selective input sourced from the original text, this is embodied in comprehensive reorganization through contextual adjustment of nuances between the original text and the transformed text.
This study produces specific educational principle under such design of educational model. Such educational principle of nuance comprehension via transformation of poetic text follows the sequence of nuance focus, nuance adjustment, and nuance acception. They are respectively manifested in discovery of deviant expression device within the text, textual transformation, and contextual interpretation of text. Learners discover morphic figure, syntactic figure, and thinking figure as a deviant device within the text, thereby focusing on nuances in terms of linguistic form and meaning surrounding the poetic text. They can attain conversion of feelings, tones, and intentions in terms of nuance through transformation across lexicon, morph, syntax, and discourse. Moreover, they can accept nuances by interpreting textual meanings with consideration for linguistic, psychological, and situational contexts.
The process of nuance comprehension through transformation of poetic text can be construed as a continuation of autonomous nuance tuning by learners. Nuance tuning is grounded upon similarity, contiguity, and difference in nuances, and such nuances are manifested in contextual interaction among feelings, tones, and intentions. Learners can enhance their sensibility about the Korean language through Korean nuance comprehension education through transformation of poetic text can enhance. They can not only improve their linguistic processing and adjustment capability during their actual application of the Korean language but also successfully perform Korean linguistic activities in tune with the Korean linguistic culture.
