The purpose of this study was to prove the effects of early morning Physical activities on academic achievement, numeracy, concentration, and learning attitude of elementary school boys. To accomplish of the purpose, total 127 boys of 5th graders were purposively selected from D elementary school in Jeonju city.
Early morning physical activities program were executed prior to the regular classes for the 66 boys of experimental group for ten months. 61 boys of control group students were taking just regular classes only except early morning physical activity program.
Academic achievement of four subject matter such as language, math, social studies, and science, and numeracy were tested using test items developed by Korea Institute of Curriculum and Evaluation. Two questionnaires were used for numeracy and learning attitude test relatively. Pre-post test were executed for both experimental and control group.
The results of the study were as follows;
i) mean score of the academic achievement of the experimental group (83.2) was significantly higher than that of the control group (81.3) (p<.05), namely, academic achievement test scores of experimental group in the all four subject matter were higher than those the control group.
ii) mean score of the numeracy of the experimental group (16.9) was significantly higher than that of the control group (13.9) (p<.05),
iii) mean score of the concentration of the experimental group (31.1) was significantly higher than that of the control group (27.8) (p<.05),
iv) mean score of the learning attitude of the experimental group (33.7) was significantly higher than that of the control group (31.8) (p<.05).
In conclusion, the early morning physical activity programs were effective to increase academic achievement, numeracy, concentration, and learning attitude of 5th graders of elementary school boys. A study using more diversified subjects was suggested for further study.
