Low-income children are generally given less opportunity of making a decent living, which can negatively affect them to establish emotional stability. They are in the situation which causes them to have psycho-social problems. This study examined how social support influences in the emotional behaviors and self-regulation capacities of children living in low-income families.

The research questions to achieve the goal of the study are the following:
first, how does social support influence in a child’s emotional behaviors?
second, how does social support influence in a child’s self-regulation capacities?

The participants of the study are the children living in permanent rental apartments located in G city. They are legally designated as low-income children who are using the after-school programs provided by the local children center or elementary schools. (The study investigated how social support influences in their emotional behaviors and self-regulation capacities.) The measures for the experiment are the 24 item questionnaire created by Han Mi-hyun (1996) to measure social support, the 41 items related to emotional behaviors for children of 4th to 6th grade developed by Yun Eun jin(2010) based on the Youth Self Report (YSR) which Achenbach(1991) revised the original Child Behavior Check List(CBCL) only for youth aged 12 to 17 years old, the 10 self-esteem items created by Rosenberg(1965) and translated by Jun Byung-je(1974), and the 20 item s of the Self-Control Rating Scale(SCRS) developed by Kendall and Wilcox(1979) and revised by Roh Duk-hyo(2010).
For the analysis of data, I used frequency and percentage for the participants’ information and correlation for the associations among social support, emotional behaviors, and self-regulation capacities. Also, I performed regression considering social support as independent variable and emotional behaviors and self-regulation capacities as dependent variables in order to identify what factors of social support influence in a child’s emotional behaviors and self-regulation capacities.

The result of the study is the following.
First, social support significantly influence in the emotional behaviors of low-income children. To be more specific, social support has negative correlations with the sub-factors of emotional behaviors such as social withdrawal, depression, and aggression and positive correlation with self-esteem.
Second, social support is significantly associated with self-regulation capacities of low-income children. Particularly, among the social support items, the teacher support has positive correlation with self-regulation capacities.

The result of the study shows that social support affects the emotional behaviors of low-income children. Therefore, the more low-income children acknowledge the social support they get, the less the problems of their emotional behaviors happen. Social support affects both emotional behaviors and self-regulation capacities of low-income children. In terms of social support items, teacher support has positive impact on low-income children’s self-regulation capacities.
