One of the purposes of this study is to investigate the degree of life satisfactions of the rural elderly, the differences and relations of life satisfactions of the rural elderly depending on variables such as activity factors, resource factors, and farming characteristic factors, factors influence on life satisfaction of the rural elderly
The other purposes of this study are to explore the measures to enhance life satisfaction of the rural elderly and to provide fundamental data about finding effective preventions and interventions for psychological stability and social cohesion.
For those purposes, research subjects were set as follows.
First, how is the degree of life satisfactions of the rural elderly?
Second, what are the differences and relations with life satisfactions depending on socio-demographic factors of the rural elderly?
Third, what are the differences and relations with life satisfactions depending on activity factors of the rural elderly?
Fourth, what are the differences and relations with life satisfactions depending on resource factors of the rural elderly?
Fifth, what are the differences and relations with life satisfactions depending on farming characteristic factors of the rural elderly?
Sixth, what is the factor has the biggest influence on life satisfactions of the rural elderly?
A survey was conducted with 300 rural elderly who are over 65 years old and use village community centers and senior citizen halls in Buyeogun and post offices of Buyeogun. Among those, 275 cases are analyzed except 25 cases are filled with errors.
Summary of the analysis results were as follows.
First, the average of life satisfaction of the rural elderly in Puyeogun is 3.29 and it means slightly higher satisfaction than 'normal'.
The point is higher than 3.12 point of Kim Youngmi's previous study, 3.03 point of Cho Hanwoo's previous survey, and 3.15 point of Yu Songja's previous research by using same measures.
Second, as a result of verifying the differences and relations of life satisfactions of the rural elderly depending on variables such as socio-demographic factors, activity factors, resource factors, and farming characteristic factors, the older they are, the lower life satisfactions are and the higher the educational level is, the higher life satisfactions are.
As activity factors, the increases of economic activities have positive correlations with life satisfaction of the rural elderly. Leisure activities are related with life satisfaction of the rural elderly. The order about the degree of influence is as follows. social-cultural, family centered, self-development. There is no significant correlations with pastime and the life satisfaction.
In the resource factors of the rural elderly, there are big differences depending on economic circumstances.
there are significant differences with life satisfaction of the rural elderly and health conditions, monthly average income, the number of diseases, computer's using.
There are positive correlations between life satisfaction of the rural elderly abd the size of social support network. Friends and neighbors are first, followed by relatives, families.
In the degree of social supports, family shows the strongest correlations and then friend, neighbour, relatives are followed.
There are significant relations with life satisfaction of the rural elderly and the convenience of life surroundings as one of farming characteristic factors.
Third, to confirm the factors very positively influences on life satisfaction of the rural elderly, socio-demographic factors are set as control variables. Activity factors, resource factor, farming characteristic factors are appointed independent variables. As the results of correlation, social supports from family is the most influential factor on life satisfaction of the rural elderly.
The higher social supports of friends and neighbor are, the better the elderly's health conditions are, the more convenient rural life surroundings are, and the more self-development activities have, the better life satisfaction of the rural elderly are.
The results show that close relations between parents and children influence positively on life satisfaction of the rural elderly even though children live far away. Based on this results, the rural experience villages lead to children's frequent visiting should be developed.
There are needed measures make the elderly solve their welfare themselves through job creation projects for securing incomes of the rural elderly and providing appropriate works.
