The purpose of this study is two-fold. Differences in brainwave activity will be defined in terms of technological thinking dispositions during candidates’ technological problem solving processes. Further, a basis for thinking-related studies will be developed for technology education.
To achieve these objectives, an expert validity test was developed, and making a motor vehicle for a soccer player was chosen as the technological question. The technological question was administered to five candidates each, according to each technological thinking disposition, for a total score of 30. During the idea and sketching processes, which were used to solve the technological question, candidates’ brainwaves were detected and analyzed. The results are summarized below.
Firstly, with respect to high beta brainwave activity, the technological operating disposition showed the highest level of activity. The technological analyze disposition; the technological planning and reflecting disposition; the technological creativity and expression disposition; and the technological curiosity disposition followed, in descending order. The technological problem identifying and resolving disposition showed the lowest level of brainwave activity. Additionally, only high beta activity showed a significant statistical difference in idea and sketching processes.
Regarding low beta brainwave activity, the technological operating disposition showed the highest level of activity. The technological creativity and expression disposition; the technological analyze disposition; and the technological planning and reflecting disposition followed, in descending order. The technological problem identifying, resolving disposition, and technological curiosity disposition showed the lowest level of brainwave activity.
Secondly, with respect to alpha brainwave activity, the technological operating disposition showed the highest level of activity. The technological analyze disposition; the technological planning and reflecting disposition; and the technological creativity and expression disposition followed, in descending order. technological problem identifying, resolving disposition, and technological curiosity disposition showed the lowest level of brainwave activity.
Thirdly, regarding theta brainwave activity, the technological operating disposition showed the highest level of activity. The technological planning and reflecting disposition; the technological analyze disposition; the technological curiosity disposition; and the technological problem identifying and resolving disposition followed, in descending order. The technological creativity and expression disposition showed the lowest level of brainwave activity.
Fourthly, with respect to delta brainwave activity, the technological operating disposition showed the highest level of activity. The technological planning and reflecting disposition; the technological problem identifying and resolving disposition; the technological analyze disposition; and the technological curiosity disposition followed, in descending order. The technological creativity and expression disposition showed the lowest level of brainwave activity.
Based on the results of this study, it is evident that the technological operating disposition showed the highest level of activity among all the brainwave types. In addition, relative to other brainwave types, only high beta brainwave activity showed a significant statistical difference in idea and sketching processes.
This study will contribute to the establishment of more effective activities at educational sites; also, it will provide useful information for the development of various types of questions in technological teaching environments.
