Humans have been utilizing literature as a method expressing their emotions. Especially, "Poems" which are expressing human emotions and ideas are medias of revealing inner suppression and unconsciousness. There are many research findings released that linguistically exposing by "writing" reduces negative emotions and enhances cognitive understanding.
The purpose of this study lies in researching effect of the journal therapy for middle aged(also known as the second adolescence) women`s establishment of self-identity and improvement of self-worth. The subjects of this study are composed by recruiting volunteers among 40~50 aged married women - 7 office workers and 2 ordinary citizens. And the control group also composed by 10 middle aged women.
The instruments for this study were, the questionnaire produced by 김광룡, 최인자 (1994) on the basis of ‘나를 존중하는 삶’ by 강승규(1994) - which is translated of Branden`s 'The six of Pillars of Self - Esteem and The Power of Self-Esteem' and 6 items of 한국형 자아정체감 검사지 developed by 박아청(2003) on the basis of Dignan Ego-identity scale.
The research methods were literature search, in-depth interview and making them do emotional cognition & expression by suggest existing literary·artistic various texts with keeping existing consultation techniques - self-understanding, self-acception and self-open in mind. And so we proceeded 10 sessions handling their psychological symptoms and reactions.
By the result of this work, we could know that their emotional status changed and enhancements of self worth and self identity. Also, every sessional results we could identify their self-positive reaction. And this means literary expression and positively effects on their emotion control by clarifying their thinking. Furthermore, we could find possibilities of affecting their personal relationships by reducing their negative emotions.
As a result, the effectiveness of literary journal method - grafted by various artistic media as a new opportunity of therapeutic program. In the future, we expect developments of various programs which enhances middle-aged women`s emotional ability whose confronting desires of establishing self-identity autonomously.
