This study aims to find out the meanings of conjunctive suffix ‘-neunde’ of Korean from the objective view based on Rhetorical Structure Theory (Mann & Thompson, 1987, 1988).
First of all, in order to find out the meanings of ‘-neunde’; 600 sentences of ‘-neunde’ were extracted from Sejong corpus. Among these 600 sentences, 300 sentences were extracted in written text and 300 sentences were extracted in spoken text. Additionally, the study also provides the frequency of ‘-neunde’ meanings in actual use.
It was observed using both i.e. written and spoken text that ‘-neunde’ has 17 meanings. These meanings are presented in the following order of frequency in actual use; Elaboration > Background > Circumstances > Joint > Contrast, Sequence > Concession > Non-Volitional Result > Volitional Cause > Antithesis > Evaluation > Non-Volitional Cause > Motivation > Justify > Volitional Result > Solutionhood > Interpretation.
To sum up, Elaboration was found the most frequently used meaning. The meanings from Elaboration to Concession cover the 90 precent use of ‘-neunde’ from the total meaning for actual use. The remaining 10 precent of meanings are covered by the remaining 10 meanings including Non-Volitional Result.
This study presented several new facts about the meaning of ‘-neunde’.
First, ‘-neunde’ has 17 varied meanings. Secondly, in this study, some meanings found were used frequently in actual; however, these were missed in previous studies i.e. Joint and Sequence. Joint and Sequence are the fourth and fifth in frequency order meanings. Especially Joint is prominent in spoken text while Sequence is in written text. Thirdly, According to RST, the meaning of Contrast and Concession are obviously different. they should be distinguished in the meaning respectively. In the previous studies the meaning of Concession was included in the Contrast. While two clauses connected by ‘-neunde’ in the Contrast play a role as a main clause, one of two clause becomes a main clause in the Concession. in order words, Contrast shows the difference of two comparing objects. because of this, each clause is to be a main clause and it dose not present writer's intention. However Concession presents the writer's intention, so it is to be a main clause. And Concession increase the reader's understanding for writer's thinking. Also Contrast and Concession had similar distribution frequency of actual use, so the two meanings need to be distinguished.
Next, this study focused on the 'neunde' meaning in written and spoken text. In written text, it presents 16 meanings except Interpretation; however, in spoken text it presents all meanings which were found in ‘-neunde’ meanings. The most used meaning is Elaboration in written text while Background is in spoken text. It was found that the frequently used meaning is Sequence in written text and Joint in spoken text, which was not noticed by previous studies.
Finally, in order to verify the classification of the meaning of ‘-neunde’ by RST, first, this research analyzed the sentences of ‘-neunde’ from four linguistic aspects. These sentences make up 90 percent of total meanings in actual use in seven different meaning areas; Elaboration, Background, Circumstances, Joint, Contrast, Sequence, Concession. four linguistic criteria used for the analysis are as following: speech act by Searle(1969)'s classification, sentence type by Nam kishim & Ko yongkun(1985)'s, verbs by Vendler(1957)'s, tense by Han Dongwan(1984)'s, Seo jungsoo(1994)'s. Second, it was found that the features of sentences of ‘-neunde’ revealed by four linguistics criteria are closely related to conditions of each meaning of RST.
