This study took the sense of happiness and adaptation to school life of children as dependant variables and the presumed parental Academic achievement pressure as an influential variable, and thereby aimed to confirm the effect of the latter on the sense of happiness and adaptation to school life of children. In particular, with an interactive effect, the study is to discover the effect of parental Academic achievement pressure on the sense of happiness and adaptation to school life of their children; and, at the same time, to confirm the effect of the sense of happiness of children on their adaptation to school life.
With this aim and using 320 children in the fifth and sixth grades in three elementary schools in Seoul, the study measured the perception of parental Academic achievement pressure and the sense of happiness and adaptation to school life of children through questionnaires.
The analyses were perdormed by SPSS 17.0 program for computing reliability, the relationship among parental Academic achievement pressure, the sense of happiness of children and the adaptation to school life of children, it was performed Independent t-test, One-way anova, Correlation analysis, Regression analysis.
Measurement tools used in this study through the existing research-proven materials and research tools were used as the center, Academic achievement pressure tests measure the pressure Jeong So-hui(2004) configured with 20-questions always chosen and reconstructed the sense of happiness of children scale Lee Jeong-hwa(2005) configured with 30-questions, home environment 11-questions, self-attribute 8-questions, ability 6-questions, interpersonal 5-questions of four areas of questions. And the adaptation to school life of children scale Lim Ji-hyeon(2009) configured with 20-questions with the teacher to 5-questions about the adaptation factors, 5-questions for a friend from school, school adjustment factors for the 5-questions in the study, 5-questions to adapt to the school rules protest is made up of four sub-regions.
The key results confirmed in this study may be summarized as follows.
First, as a result of analyzing the relationship between parental Academic achievement pressure and the sense of happiness of children, it was found that there was a significant correlation between them. Accordingly, it was confirmed that in order to raise the sense of happiness of children, parental Academic achievement pressure should be reduced. Also, it can be shown that the less the parental Academic achievement pressure, the higher the sense of happiness of children concerning family environment, self-characteristics, ability and interpersonal relationships.
Second, it was discovered that parental Academic achievement pressure had a significant correlation with the adaptation to school life of children so that in order to improve the adaptation to school life of children there should be a decrease in parental Academic achievement pressure. Furthermore, regarding the items of adaptation to school life of children, it appears that the lower is the parental Academic achievement pressure, the higher is the teacher ’s competence, adaptation to friends, adaptation to learning, and adaptation to rules.
Third, in looking into the relationship between the sense of happiness of children and the adaptation to school life of children, there was a positive correlation between the two variables; therefore, it was confirmed that in order to increase the the adaptation to school life of children, the sense of happiness of children should be enhanced.
The study reviewed the meaning of the above results through existing research, and discussed the limitations in this study.
