The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of art therapy of Mutual Scribble Story Making on the social interaction of adolescent with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Totally, 2 adolescent with Autism Spectrum Disorders who is attending general middle school in Daegu were participated. Instrument that used for a pre- and post-test was Parent reporting questionnaire survey. Pre-test was conducted in May 2011 that is before a week of first art therapy and post-test was conducted in October 2011 that is 2weeks after the end of session. Art therapy program with Mutual Scribble Story Making was performed from May 2011 to September 2011. The session conducted during 50 minutes per week, total 18 times. Ten minutes before the session, participants had time of free play period. To examine the degree of change in social interaction of adolescent with autism spectrum disorder, modified Social Interaction Rating Scale was used to compare and analyze the change of behavior in intervention. The tool was based on Jungsun Jung(1997) and Jihae Kim(2007)’s Social Interaction Rating Scale which is modification of Wetherby & Prutting(1984), Quill(1995)’s Social interaction items.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, art therapy with mutual scribble story making showed positive effects on social interaction of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder during intervention.
Second, art therapy with mutual scribble story making showed positive effects on social interaction of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder during daily life.
To summarize, art therapy with mutual scribble story making could be assume as effective tools for enhancing social interaction through exchanging mutual story and experiencing visual and tactual media with positive interaction.
