The purpose of this study is to have a better understanding of development aspects in teenagers and to study teenagers' ego-identity based on Erik H. Erikson. Also, it builds a basis of dialogue on the ego-identity formation of teenagers at home and the importance of family. Teenagers in the time of an ego-identity crisis have to solve their problems with sound ego-identity in their family.
Adolescents who are confused and experience conflict with others, experience crisis because of the many developmental subjects which they must overcome, along with the social cultural pressures to grow into an adult. Also, teenagers in the time of an ego-identity crisis, must accept the physical and psychological changes which occur to oneself suddenly and must find the answers to inner questions for establishing ego-identity.
Ego-identity formation of teenagers is the central facet in establishing life purpose and leading a future life. Erikson says that the core of ego-identity is inner homogeneity and continuity in relation to others. He says the settlement of ego-identity is the decisive influence in his entire life.
During the development process, teenagers who are no longer entirely in the parents' protection still need warm care especially inside the family. They also need deep understanding for resolving conflict and confusion in the growth process. However, it is actually family who have to discharge such losses, little by little, because of the changes in current society.
Home environment, the relationship with parents and communication at home have an effect on the ego-identity of teenagers. Crucially, the role of parents, communication between teenagers and their parents and parents' attitude have a great effect upon the ego-identity of teenagers and affirmative ego formation.
Teenagers achieve ego-identity desirably and they do not experience a crisis of ego-identity when their parents love them, are concerned about them, believe in them, recognize them and are concerned with the whole family's issues. Because of this, families must understand adolescents correctly. They must be involved with them and love them. Therefore, parents must help their teenagers develop character.
