The origin of ㅸ/β/ in Late Middle Korean has been a controversial issue in the Korean historical phonology. Since each of the three well-known hypotheses on the issue, the /*p/-, /*β/- and /*b/-origin, has its own valid grounds as well as weaknesses, the controversy has lasted for a long period. On the basis of the evidence from dialects and the phonological universal, I consider that the /*p/-origin is the more reasonable and plausible hypothesis than the other two. If we accept the hypothesis, however, the following two questions must be answered: first, how can we explain with the hypothesis the “exceptions” that still retain /p/ between voiced sounds; second, how can we explain the diachronic change of ㅸ’s phonological status? This thesis is devoted to answering these two questions.
The first question can be easily answered by the hypothesis of lexical diffusion. That is, the /p/ lenition was an ongoing sound change in Middle Korean, but it stopped during its course before reaching its end point. Among the relevant vocabulary, the /p/ lenition rule applied preferentially to those words that meet the following conditions: segmental (words with the more sonorous segment in the final position of the /p/-containing syllable), origin of the words (native rather than Sino-Korean words) and word occurrence frequency (more frequent rather than less frequent words). The reason for the rule loss is to keep the phoneme /p/ between voiced sounds. Otherwise, the primary and unmarked phoneme would disappear from the environment.
To answer the second question, phonologization and dephonologization of ㅸ should be postulated. ㅸ’s phonological function in the 15th-century Korean shows that ㅸ had a phonemic status. It means that ㅸ[β], originally an allophone of /p/, phonologized before the 15th century. Its phonologization was actuated by apocope of verb stems with open syllable, say ‘C1V1C2V2’ (C2=[β]) because the deletion of V2 of the stem caused loss of the conditioning environment of [β]. Due to both language-universal and language-specific factors, however, the phoneme /β/ dephonologized around the 15th century. The former refers to the newly created marked system of the fricative at the time. That is, the phonologization of voiced fricative series made the fricative system with the voiceless outnumbered by the voiced. The latter represents the low functional load of the /β/ and a series of therapeutic changes occurred in Middle Korean: loss of the /p/ lenition rule, expansion of the syllable structure and increase of the number of phoneme.
