This is a research of how much a regular cultural and artistic activities can affect externalizing and internalizing behavior problem. of runaway teenagers. Also, by introducing some domestic cases, the role of cultural and artistic activities support will be explained and how it can be more improved will be offered. Runaway teenagers tend to be marginalized in obtaining various information and enjoying cultural activities, and experience social inequality. Consequently, they become psychologically unstable and commit an irregularity. This paper will show what differences cultural and artistic activities can give on teenagers' externalizing and internalizing behavior problem.
This research was conducted on twenty-eight teenagers from 6 teen shelters in Gyeonggi-do and Incheon area from August, 2011 to November, 2011 once or twice a month. Each had chances to see an exhibition, a play, a musical. They were guided by an advisor before and after the show. In order to see changes in externalizing and internalizing behavior problem, Korean-Youth Self Report : K-YSR was used. It was performed before and after the activity. Also, teenagers and the advisors had a focus group interview. Collected information was tabulated by the program called SPSS 18.0, with paired t-Test, the result was analyzed.
As a result, regular cultural and artistic activities did have an effect on reducing teenagers' externalizing and internalizing behavior problem. Internalizing problems such as atrophy, somatization, depression, and anxiety got better. Above all, depression and anxiety showed a major improvement. When it came to externalizing problem, the research was particularly executed on aggressiveness and delinquency, and only the aggressiveness had an effect. The reduction in externalizing and internalizing behavior problem was indicated in focus group interview as well.
This helped me to come up with following remedies. Although the teen shelters offer great programs for teens' independency and self-support, their affection should be concerned first. We need to support them to broaden their perspectives. It would be great if the activity is amusing, but the content must be considered qualitatively and educationally. So, kids can experience various things. Moreover, further actions on searching for more cultural and artistic activities and studying adolescents' affection should be taken before it gets offered..
However, It would be foolish to generalize this since there was only one subject, runaway teenagers and it is not scientifically proved. You will find limits since we failed to do research on cultural and artistic activities. We hope this research will give a hand to future ones.
