As part of their developmental task, university students have the important mission of building intimacy and most of them experience intimacy through dating the opposite sex. As sexual beings, university students are in the transitional phase between the adolescence and adulthood and go through sexual experience before their values on sex are fully formed. The average marrying age is becoming older in general and it is delaying the experience of sexual relationships viewed socially acceptable. Thus the students in their twenties who are in their sexual prime are naturally inclined to be sexually active. However, premarital sex entails physical and relational problems making it difficult to establish fixed standards for the sexual behavior of university students. The previous studies on the sexual behavior of university students mostly focused on quantitative results. When one considers sex is predominantly a private and individual experience, it is a topic requiring a qualitative research. Thus, this study performed both a quantitative and qualitative examination in order to provide adequate sex education guidelines for university students.
For this purpose, this study established the following research questions; First, “What is the essential meaning of the sexual behavior of university students who have experienced romantic relationships?”; Second, “What are the current state of the sexual behavior of university students who have experienced romantic relationships?”; Third, “What are the sexual communication, attitude and behavior according to variables found in individual context?”; Fourth, “What impact does the sexual communication and behavior with a friend or a lover have on university students’ sexual attitude?”; and Fifth, “Does the sexual communication with a friend or a lover and the sexual attitude of a college student who has experienced a relationship affect his/her sexual behavior?”
The sexual behavior of university students in a relationship is in itself a physical activity that takes place between the persons involved in a relationship which changes throughout time and in a variety of spaces. Thus, this study applied van Manen’s analytica,l phenomenological method to perform a qualitative study on five male and female students respectively. This study also performed a quantitative study on 359 university students (52.6% male, 47.4% female) who have experienced dating the opposite sex to examine the current statistics regarding the sexual behavior of university students. In addition this study looked into the effect of the sexual communication between friends and a couple on university students’ sexual attitude and the effect of the sexual attitude on their sexual behavior. SPSS 19.0, frequency analysis, cross-tabulation, factorial analysis, reliability analysis (Cronbach α), independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and regression analysis were performed for the accuracy of the findings.
As a result of analyzing the responses of the participants, the following fundamental topics were found; ‘the start of a relationship’, ‘sharing daily life with the lover’, ‘getting to know each other through conflicts’, ‘conflicts arising from other friends of opposite sex’, ‘the relationships becomes more comfortable after the first kiss’, ‘having a sexual intercourse’, ‘choosing a contraceptive’, ‘confusion’, ‘becoming more intimate with the lover’, and ‘pursuing sexual pleasure.’
The participants of this study were found to have spatial, physical, time, and relational experiences through being in a relationship with a new partner and having a sexual relationship. The participants were often involved in relationships with peers or fellow students within their respective college, student club or department and had their first few dates mostly within the campus, taking a class together or joining each other in club activities and doing course assignments together. Participants had relational experiences through eating a meal or drinking coffee together near campus. The participants experienced physical aspect of the relationship through going to the partner’s home and becoming more physically intimate with each other. As time passed, and with more of these visits, the physical intimacy intensified and evolved into a sexual intercourse at home or in a motel. Some participants were experiencing the spatial, relational and physical aspects in combination by going on a trip together for a special occasion. Participants experienced the relational aspect through their commitment and conflicts during their relationship and also through getting to know each other because of the commitment and conflicts. They experienced physical intimacy through physical affection and intercourse. As the physical affection and sexual intimacy happened in the course of the relationship it could be said that the participants experienced the time aspect and relational aspect of the relationship. The participants became sexually active in their relationships and found their sexual self in the process. They were able to recognize their sexual desire while sharing the sexual behavior with a partner and were experiencing confusion as well as intimacy with the partner by acting on their sexual desire. On the other hand, the process of establishing their own value system regarding sex before the becoming sexually active was entirely absent in the university students examined in this study.
As a result of examining the sexual behavior of university students who experienced a romantic relationship, it was found that university students were most likely to engage in sexual behavior with the mutual consent of both parties. The second most likely situation for sex for university students was when they were drunk. The place of first sexual intercourse for university students was most often ‘a hospitality facility’ or their home or their partner’s home. Most university students responded that they felt closer to their partner after sex. 66.3% of those sexually active responded that they were using one-time contraceptive for each sexual intercourse and listed ‘condoms’ as the most widely used contraceptive method.
In general, male university students were more open in terms of sexual attitude and sexual behavior than female university students, and older students showed more openness towards sexual behavior and attitude. Older students also were found to feel more responsible about contraception and had more effective sexual communication with their partners. Also, those who lived alone or lived in a lodging home were more open about sexual attitude and behavior than the students who lived in a dormitory.
When the effect of the sexual communication experience on the university students’ sexual attitude was examined, it was found that the university students who had more open communication with a sexual partner or lover were more likely to view sex as pleasure. Also, the university students who had more open communication with a sexual partner or lover were more likely to have an accepting attitude towards sex. On the contrary, it was found that the sexual communication between friends and the sexual communication between a couple had no bearing on the sexual responsibility. As a result of examining sexual communication and attitude on the sexual behavior, the sexual communication between friends did not affect the sexual behavior, whereas, open sexual communication between a dating couple led to more open sexual behavior. The university students who viewed sex as pleasure and students who had an accepting attitude towards sex were more likely to demonstrate open sexual behavior, however, sexual responsibility was found to have no bearing on sexual behavior. When the sexual communication between friends and the sexual communication between a couple were open, they both led to more pleasure-seeking and accepting attitude towards sex. Open sexual attitude led to open sexual behavior. Open sexual communication between a couple also led to more open sexual behavior.
There were some overlapping results but also some discrepancies between the qualitative analysis and quantitative analyses performed in this study. Thus a discussionontheimplicationsandlimitationsoftheresultswasincludedaswellasadiscussiononthefuturetopicsthatneedtobeaddressed.
