To search and utilize art records efficiently, above all, a systematic records management system must be established, hence the most critical challenge is the development of standardized metadata. In this study, the art archive projects were reviewed with perspectives in records management aspect, and the art archives metadata were examined.
Domestic and foreign case studies on the descriptions and metadata on art archives were reviewed, and interviews on professionals in the area were conducted to develop metadata elements for fine art archives. Then a set of metadata for fine art records were developed and proposed, which include the top-level of 24 elements, and sub-level of 73 elements. They consist of five categories, which include structural, context, content, records management, process, and context of art work.
The metadata set suggested is on the theoretical level to manage fine art records in the broad fields, rather than focusing on the organization of specific area. Therefore, the actual application in the course of art records management needs some supplementary efforts by adding variety of newly idendified information. Further studies are expected in this field.
