As relations between human and science become closer in 21C, technology development using computer accomplished and cutting-edge technology is used as main method expressing our creativity and imaginations. Since today new and fresh ideas get spotlights and fun settles down as critical element in design, Funology(Fun+Technology) pursuing enjoyment along with function appears as new phenomenon, which settles down as new trend considering emotional aspect as well as functional aspect to modern people who try seeking for emotional communion in living style and culture.
The purpose of the study is to investigate funology characteristics appearing kitsch fashion which becomes the center of trend starting from sub fashion, study funology images appearing kitsch fashion, and analyze characteristics through cases. Methods of the study are theoretical researches through advanced research and national and international literature reviews and empirical researches based on photo materials of fashion sites to analyze design elements. Range of research is from 2005' S/S season to 2012' S/S season and investigated based on oversea top 4 fashion collections.
Summery and conclusion of the study are like below.
At first, based on theoretical reviews on concepts and changes of kitsch fashion and origin of a word, concept, and characteristics of kitsch, formative characteristics of kitsch fashion were investigated. And next, characteristics of funology expressed in diverse fields of emotional digital era were divided to fun and technology and concepts on funology fashion were spreaded, and based on these, formative characteristics of funology fashion were investigated. In the results analyzing characteristics discussed above, characteristics of funology could be induced as caricature, escapism, and non-seriousness, and by selecting three designers, Comme des Garcons, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, and Jeremy Scott, who have noticeable characteristics, analyzed their design characteristics.
First, caricature is aesthetic status distorted and transformed through simplification and exaggeration and was expressed through juxtaposition of different objects and contrasting mix and match, and switched creation method in Comme des Garcons' works.
Second, escapism is a type of kitsch allowing temporary escaping from anxiety and tension in front of human's reality and appeared as the type of return to the past. Castelbajac's works suggested surrealism expression and massages symbolizing reality with motives of nature, simple silhouette, and introduction of childish objects with light colors and expressed humor and wit.
Third, non-seriousness is the transition desire on seriousness of life and the fashion expression standing out in the sensation and emotion era, and can be found in playing wit. Jeremy Scott's works were expressed combination of composite elements using objects with wit and humor, revival of realistic print, pop art images of public characteristics.
Like above, three designers viewed modern reinterpretation on aesthetic inadequacies of kitsch in the aspects of amusement, expressed the motives as emotional interests and beauty of humor, and pursued new styles of kitsch fashion in diverse techniques of materials and production procedures.
Like the above reviews, modern kitsch fashion exists as positive value creating humorous styles making the public laugh and pursuing internal stability and happiness escaping pressure of reality. Plus, funology characteristics appearing in kitsch fashion implicate necessity of compromising harmony with emotions of emotional digital era and technology and is considered as influencing elements to understand modern people's emotions pursuing changes and improvement and accepting cutting-edge technology. Especially, funology characteristics are expected to have values as method to provide ideas enlarging aesthetic range of modern fashion design.
