This research profoundly studies the recent, and often, suicide cases of celebrities. For a while, celebrity suicide cases were focused on his or her mental depression; however, it is most likely that the mental states of celebrities are less stable compared to those of non-celebrities. There fore, in order to better understand the psychological phenomenon, it is necessary that one studies not only depression, but also other variables. In other words, the stress that celebrities are under may be a direct cause to their suicide, but one must not neglect the celebrities’ social and psychological variables.
This research investigates the deeply intertwined relationship between stress and suicide of celebrities, by dividing, based on previous research studies, numerous variables into three different categories: psychological variables, structural variables, protection variables. Frist, psychological variables are public self-consciousness, and ego-identity, which provide us with a window into the celebrities’ personal emotions and psychological characteristics. Secondly, structural variables are popularity and exposure to media, which naturally result from their occupation as celebrities. Lastly, protection variables are religion and community service. Concluding that stress is an immediate cause to suicide is quite a long run. It is rather that the stress celebrities are under affects the social favor, and that social support is what leads to craving suicide; the thought process from receiving the social support, to suicidal urges is greatly affected by the mediating process. The social support can be defined as supporting from fans, friends, and parents. Under such conditions, this dissertation covers A. Does stress have a direct effect on celebrity suicide? B. Does the influence of stress on suicide vary depending on specific socio-psychological circumstances? C. Does social support holds a place as a mediator between stress and suicide? This research conducted a survey targeting 188 of currently working actors, singers, entertainers of both sex, and, with the exception of 7 insincere responses, 181 results were analyzed. It is resulted that A. Between the relationship of stress and suicide, depending on the cause, stress had various effects on moderator variables and suicide. B. the desire for suicide is in direct proportion to stress, C. religion acts as a moderator, D. Out of the social supports, such as parents, friends, and fans, parents were the mediators in stress caused by peer pressure and reward stress, whereas friends were the mediators in stress caused by Job Stress.
To conclude the research, celebrities who are under stress have different causes of stress, and those reasons differently affect suicidal urges and the process leading to them. Also, religion plays a role as a moderator between the interaction of stress and suicide. Although stress can be a direct influence to suicide, parents and friends of celebrities who are positive social inputs mediates the urge to commit suicide. Therefore, both religion and social support, as proved moderator and mediator variables to celebrities, must understand the celebrities’ psychological health on suicide and intervene in consultation.
