This research analyze how appear mother's responsible manners differently about their children who prepare university entrance examinations by their enneagram type. This study use a VETI(Vision Enneagram Type Inventory for Adult) as a tool of personality type test, perform in-depth interview to 42 mothers who has sons and daughters preparing university entrance examinations and live in Seoul, Inchon and Gyeonggi.
First, the mothers belonging to Type 5 showed that they attempted to objectively analyze what made their children’s academic performance lower, by finding out relevant information. They tended to consider their own time and space as important; for this reason, they let their children cope with their situations filled with stress and solve them on their own. They had a tendency to think of their children’s situations a lot and to behave carefully rather than to express their emotions to a great extent.
Second, the mothers of Type 6 showed an emotional reaction to their children under stress, predicted the results and demonstrated their anxieties and concerns. They believed that they were good mothers when they analyzed and solved the problems with academic performance and career of their children on their own. They tended to ask people whom they could trust and rely on and who could help them, regarding the problems with their children's college entrance exam.
Third, the mothers of Type 7 were optimistic about the situations where their children were preparing a college entrance exam and made an effort to have their children feel pleasant and have an interest in things, by treating them like their friends. If they recognized that their children were under stress, they tended to rather focus on themselves and enjoy something new and interesting for themselves. They had a tendency to avoid the reactions of their children derived from the college-entrance exam related stress or to point them out and give them what should be done.
Fourth, the mothers of Type 2 were sensitive to the need of their children during their preparation for college entrance exam, wanted to help them by any means and felt sorry for them. They made an effort to trust their children under any stressful situations, sympathized and understood the mind and behaviors of their children. On the other hand, they tended to be tired of the relationships with others; for this reason, they wanted to avoid the stressful situations confronted by their children.
Fifth, the mothers of Type 3 did their best to help their children so that they could have the best results and have a sense of purpose and passion. In the relationship with their children, the mothers felt sorry for not taking better care of their children under stress. They tended to think of the image for the success of their children as important and persuaded them to follow their advice.
Sixth, the mothers of Type 4 reacted immediately to the stress of their children. However, they regretted what they had done and expressed what they felt sorry for in words or by behavior. They concentrated on and expressed their favorite things even under the situations that their children were preparing a college entrance exam; on the other hand, they were conscious of the way other people were looking at them. They were worried about the career of their children, but they knew how to comfort their emotions.
Seventh, the mothers of Type 8 were willing to embrace the reactions of their children under stress, but they were angry outwardly when they thought that those reactions were way too much. Even under the situations where their children were stressed out, they regarded the love and kinship of their families as very important and tended to trust their children or be on their side rather than being optimistic or pessimistic too frequently about the ups and downs of their academic performance.
Eighth, the mothers of Type 9 did not show immediate reactions to their children preparing the college entrance exam and waited for the time when their children could solve the problems by themselves. In terms of the career of their children, they made an effort to recognize what their children wanted to do, but experienced a sense of lethargy for the roles of mothers. They endeavored to make their family peaceful with patience even under the situations where they were stressed out.
Ninth, the mothers of Type 1 thought of the principles and belief as important and showed disappointment and expressed it emotionally when the academic performance of their children fell short of their expectations or their children did not play their role properly. However, they exerted themselves to play a role as mothers, while enduring the situations even if they were aggravated. They tended to be anxious and worried a lot about the future of their children in many occasions.
As shown above, the results of this study were similar to those of the characteristics of personality types in Enneagram that was known to be excellent in showing the characteristics by personality type. Namely, the mothers who had children preparing for the college entrance exam reacted to the stress of their children by personality type and reacted in accordance with a central energy.
This study discover that mothers deal differently with stress about their children's entrance examination by their enneagram type. Accordingly, this study will contribute so both mothers and children understand each personal traits that helping children undergo their harsh period and encouraging satisfaction and happiness in family. In addition, this study will have significance as applying to education for mothers in child welfare field work.
