The present study examined the relation of cognitive emotional strategies and psychological symptom (depression and anxiety), and tested the hypothesis that these relations would be mediated by resilience. A sample of 237 outpatient at Seoul completed the Korean version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), Beck depress inventory-second edition (BDI-II) and Trait Anxiety Inventory (TAI). This study adopted a two-dimensional conceptualization for CER(maladaptive and adaptive CER). Maladaptive CERs are included self-blame, blame others, rumination, catastrophizing, while adaptive CERs are includes acceptance , putting into perspective, positive refocusing, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal.
The data was analyzed with Person's correlation, Path Analysis by SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs. The results of this study are as follows.
Firstly, maladaptive CERs was positively correlated with symptom and negatively correlated with resilience, but adaptive CERs was opposed it.
Secondly, Results from mediate analyses supported the hypothesis showing that resilience mediated the relationship of CER and symptoms. Especially, resilience was fully mediated the relationship of maladaptive CER and symptoms, but it was partially mediated the relationship of adaptive CER and symptoms.
These results suggested that resilience's mediating effect provides information about the base mechanism in the relationship between CER and depressive & anxious symptom. And maladaptive CERs directly and indirectly affect depression and anxiety, so treatment goal is to decrease using maladaptive CERs for a short period. On the other hand, adaptive CERs indirectly affect depression and anxiety through resilience level, so adaptive CERs intervention simultaneously performs with encouraging resilience intervention.
