Trauma is an emotional or psychological injury that affects the current behavior and emotion consistently, usually resulting from a past shocking situation. Emotional injury of growing period makes teenagers more confused in their value judgments because it is difficult for them to establish positive self-esteem and identity in the era of Internet, standardized education, and competition for university entrance.
High school students have the anxiety about the future and their identity is not established affected by the rapidly changing social structure and cut-throat competition.
Therefore, they need to know themselves to have high self-esteem and they should know their inner voice for their self- realization. Self-healing lessons through self-portraits are very effective because they can recover their sense of stability from their psychological injury.
Desirable self-healing lesson plans for the tenth graders will be presented and the healing effect by experiencing the personal inner change through drawing self-portraits which is the way of expressing self-consciousness will be shown in this thesis. The purpose of this dissertation is to help students to have the insight into themselves by the formation of their positive self-perception and the right judgement.
The following are sub-goals according to the purpose.
First, we can see the most serious aspect from the innermost of the person who drew it because a self-portrait is made by instinct and self-consciousness and the painter is supposed to think about the way he or she wants to be seen and express their trauma seriously.
Second, there will be an improvement in self-healing through self-portrait class.
Third, drawing class as a self-healing activity will help students to have insights into themselves by the formation of their positive self-perception and the right judgement. The methods of the research are as follows.
First, there was a pre-to-post and analysis of the results of the classes for the 37 students of S High School in Seoul.
Second, analysis of the works of some representative artists who had self-healing activities such as Gogh, Munk, Egon Schiele, and Frida Kahlo was done. Because self-healing through works of art can be regarded as art therapy, there was a research about theoretical background of art therapy and self-healing through self-portrait and psychology.
Third, the design of self-portait drawing class was based on the self-expression training program of Kim Jeong-won(2007). The classes were made of 5 periods and there was a pre-to-post and analysis of the results of the classes.
This research will help students to live harmoniously in a society by forming their positive self-perception and establishing their views of value and identity for they can ask themselves about their problems for their better future.
Therefore, it can be concluded that self-portait drawing program as self-healing activities can help students to build up their identities and give them self-healing effects. But, the result cannot be generalized down to all the high school students because the subjects of this research were boys and girls and the number of them is not large. It is expected to study about systematic self-training programs focused on various activities in the field of fine arts.
Since the aim of fine art subject education is to contribute to the developing student's creativity, sentiment and aesthetic sense, not to grow them as specialist of fine art, it should pursue the realization of self-identity, the ultimate purpose of all-around education, by providing the fine art program applicable to the developmental stage of the youth. Especially, continual care by teacher and parents is required for the establishment of self-identity in youth age on the transient phase of developmental stage.
