Issue of alcoholism from binge drinking and alcohol abuse is a serious problem which damages individual and society to cost physical, mental price, and also transfers drinking tendency and drinking culture to the society. Due to tendency of tolerance toward drinking in Korean society there are fewer alcohol awareness campaign than other public campaign, and audience realization toward the issue of alcoholism is relatively less. To increase the effects of public health campaign, audience segmentation should be required, and sensation seeking with self-efficacy would work as criteria for attitude toward message and behavioral intension.
Besides considering belief of individual and nature of characteristic, using appropriate appeals would help audience to receive message of campaign more easily. Especially fear appeals and humor appeals are generally used appeal types throughout campaign and advertisement message strategy, which was also used by this research to set up alcohol abuse prevention campaign.
This study shows sensation seeking and self-efficacy, and how appeal types would affect attitude of campaign message and audience behavioral intension, based on preliminary researches throughout countries.
In addition, difference between outcomes by type of fear appeals and humor appeals were analyzed, based on understanding of main effect and interaction between criteria. First theory is interaction between sensation seeking and self-efficacy would affect message attitude of campaign-viewer, and second theory is they would affect campaign audience intension of behavior. To understand interaction between three criteria, subjects of inquiry were also set up. First, how sensation seeking, self-efficacy and appeal types would affect attitude of campaign message, and second, how they would affect campaign-audience behavioral intension.
To give answers to theories and inquiries, experiment was on 346 people from 20-60 years old, female and male. Alcohol abuse prevention campaigns used on this research each shows both fear appeals and humor appeals for the study. Subjects could only answer one of the campaigns. Sensation seeking and self-efficacy were divided into two groups. Main results of experiment were like below.
Sensation seeking and self-efficacy interacted only in the type of humor appeals. To put it concretely, attitude toward message was more positive in fear appeals with low sensation seeking, high self-efficacy group. Although in humor appeals, with high sensation seeking, high self-efficacy group showed negative message attitude. This can be interpreted that humor appeals can be less effective than fear appeals when delivering message authenticity. In other words, viewer with high self-efficacy who also has high sensibility toward message would react negatively with humor appeals.
On the other hand, interaction between criteria was meaningless when it came to behavioral intension and only sensation seeking tendency and main effect of self-efficacy were found, which leads to conclusion that effect of campaign toward action is not as big as expected due to nature of drinking. Also, drinking is closely related to society which individual belongs, and level of drinking can be differed by several causes. If more accurate results are needed, these factors should be well considered.
Under subject of alcohol abuse prevention campaign, this study analyzed characteristics of viewer; sensation seeking and self-efficacy, and interaction between humor appeals and fear appeals. This made possible to design segmented campaign based on results, which is a significance of this study. Also, this study shows its importance defining what suitable type of appeals for public health care campaign is by understanding difference of audience message attitude and behavioral intention between humor and fear appeals. Following study based on this thesis should be done with sensation seeking tendency’s low rank scale criterion analyzing and phased application on humor and fear.
