The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among ego-resilience, defense mechanism, and stress of elementary school students.
In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the research questions posed in this study were as follows:
1. Is there any relationship between children's ego-resilience and stress?
2. Is there any relationship between children's ego-resilience and defense mechanism styles?
3. Is there any relationship between defense mechanism styles and stress?
4. Is there any relationship between defense mechanism styles and stress according to the level of ego-resilience?
The participants in this study were 245 children in the 6th grade from two elementary schools in Cheongju city. A questionnaire to measure ego-resilience, defense mechanism, and stress were administered to them. The data obtained were analyzed by t-tests using SPSS 15.0 statistical program.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. It was found that the higher group in ego-resilience scored significantly lower in stress than the lower group in ego-resilience.
2. It was found that the lower group in ego-resilience used immature and conflict-avoiding defense mechanism style significantly more than the higher group in ego-resilience, but the higher group in ego-resilience used adaptive defense mechanism style significantly more than the lower group in ego-resilience. No significant relationship was found between ego-resilience and self-restraining defense mechanism style.
3. It was found that the higher group in three defense mechanism(immature, self-restraining, conflict-avoiding) styles scored significantly higher in stress than the lower group in three defense mechanism styles. It was found that the higher group in adaptive defense mechanism style scored significantly lower in stress than the lower group in adaptive defense mechanism style.
4. Significant differences found between three defense mechanism(immature, self-restraining, conflict-avoiding) styles and stress according to the level of ego-resilience.
