The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mother's self-esteem, emotional empathy and parenting behavior on young children's emotional intelligence. Subjects of this study consisted of 377 mothers whose young children were attending kindergarten which were located in Cheongwon-gun and Cheongju-si. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, Cronbach's α, t-test, Pearson's correlation, and regression using SPSS 12.0 program.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there were significant differences in mother's self-esteem according to mother and father's educational level and mother's job. There were significant differences in mother's emotional empathy according to mother's educational level and mother's job. There were significant differences in mother's parenting behavior according to mother and father's educational level and mother's job.
Second, there were significant differences in young children's emotional intelligence according to their gender, mother and father's educational level, and mother's job.
Third, the result found the significant effects of mother's emotional empathy and mother's affectionate parenting behavior on young children's self emotional awareness. That is, children who had mothers with higher emotional empathy and affectionate parenting behavior showed higher self-emotional awareness of young children.
Fourth, the significant effects of mother's authoritative parenting behavior on young children's self emotional regulation was found. That is, children who had mothers with lower authoritative parenting behavior showed higher self emotional regulation.
Fifth, the significant effects of mother's emotional empathy and mother's affectionate parenting behavior on young children's awareness to others emotions was found. That is, children who had mothers with higher emotional empathy and affectionate parenting behavior showed higher emotional awareness to others.
Sixth, the result found the significant effects of mother's self-worth, emotional empathy and mother's affectionate parenting behavior on young children's regulation others emotions. That is, children who had mothers with higher self-worth, emotional empathy and mother's affectionate parenting behavior showed higher others emotional regulation of young children.
