The purpose of this study is to verify the problems on personal relations that adults with complex trauma in childhood and examine the moderating effects of emotional intelligence as personal traits that reduce the difficulties on the personal relations.
In order to achieve the above purpose, this study conducted investigation on 700 students who live in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The research components include Childhood Traumatic Questionnaire, Wong & Law Emotional Intelligence Scale, and Korea Inventory of Interpersonal Problem that used the self-report survey questionnaire as the tool of research.
The results of this study are as follows. First, the correlation analysis showed that the interpersonal problem in adulthood was positively correlated with complex trauma in childhood. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was r=.25(p<.01). The interpersonal problem and emotional intelligence were negatively correlated(r=-.38, p<.01).
Second, the simple regression analysis showed that complex trauma in childhood and emotional intelligence have each causal effects on the interpersonal problem in adulthood. The more complex trauma in childhood, the more interpersonal problem in adulthood. The more emotional intelligence, the less interpersonal problem.
Third, based on the results of examining the moderating effects of the emotional intelligence between the complex trauma in childhood and the interpersonal problem in adulthood, the adults with high emotional intelligence less experienced the difficulties on the personal relations than the adults with low emotional intelligence in the group with high complex trauma in childhood.
Through the results of this study, it was verified that the emotional intelligence could moderate the difficulties of the problems on the personal relations in the adults with complex trauma in childhood. Therefore, it is meaningful that this study provided practical suggesting points rather than solving the problems on the personal relations.
