A Study on the Problems in the Current Korean Orthography and its Improvement
A orthography of a certain country should be a standard for correct and better use of language and a guidance of daily language life for its people. The actual and concrete language rules are required to prevent the disorder and misuse and to provide the correct and better uses. The Korean orthography is the very criterion. The current Korean orthography, Korean spelling system, was formulated and announced in 1988 after several revisions of the ‘Unified Draft of Korean Alphabet’ which was set by Chosun Language Society in 1933.
Current Korean orthography, however, has some problems and needs to be corrected, but it isn't yet researched systematically enough, and isn't arranged systematically about what the orthography is, and about what and how we should deal with, though it has a longer history than other language rules, and has much effect on the written language in our daily life.
The purpose of this study is to ascertain the problems in the current Korean orthography and to find the its desirable improvements. The research finds out the problems of language expressions related to our daily language life, and tries to make desirable written system. Thus this study carefully examines and compares each item of language rules with our daily language life, finding out the ways of making out better Korean orthography. This study should be a try to make simple, concise and reasonable rules that Korean speakers can use easily.
The main subject of research is ‘Korean Orthography’, published by Ministry of Education in 1988.
The problems of the current Korean orthography are as follows with the ways of improvement.
In the first Chapter, the general rules of Korean orthography, there are some obscure concept of the ‘grammar’. With the newly introduced term, ‘morpheme’ the Korean orthography can have the simple and better explanations.
The second Chapter has the problems with the name and the number of Korean consonants and vowels in the Korean orthography. Thus the additional clarification about consonants subjoined at the end of a Korean orthographic syllable is needed.
The third Chapter which might bear similar construction with the first subsection of the rules of sounds should be deleted and the new chapter, ‘the marking rule for Chinese character’ should be created for the subsection 10-12.
Some subsections in the fourth Chapter with the rules of morphemes are in discord with the school grammar and divided with a lot of subsections. For example, the current ‘Sai-shi-ot[ㅅ] Addition rule’ limits the use of it too much. Therefore the simple and clear explanations are needed in this chapter.
In the fifth Chapter which made mention of the rules about spacing words, for the conflict and the little lack of consistency among the rules about bound nouns, nouns for the unit and nouns for enumeration, the needs of clear and logical rules are presented.
The sixth Chapter should be inserted in from the first Chapter to the fifth Chapter or in the rules of the standard language.
The conclusion based on the things discussed and suggested in this thesis is that the language rules for the public should be simple, concise, consistent, and logical. With this purpose, this study involves the various aspects of Korean orthography to be accessible and better rules.
