A Study on the ‘Bok-seo-jung-jong’(卜筮正宗)
- Focused on ‘18 questions and answers’(十八問答) –

‘Bok-seo-jung-jong’(卜筮正宗), a ‘Yuk-hyo-hak’(六爻學) book, was published by ‘Wang-heung-seo’(王洪緖), a well-reputed scholar during the Ching dynasty. There are two important parts in this book, one is ‘Chun-gum-bu’(千金賦), and the other is the ’18 questions and answers’(十八問答). As ‘Chun-gum-bu’(千金賦) had been published already, this thesis has mainly focused on the ’18 questions and answers’(十八問答). The book was modeled after ‘Hwang-geum-chek’(黃金策) by ‘You-baek-on’(劉佰溫) from the Ming Dynasty. It had been originally started by ‘Kyoung-bang’ of the Han dynasty which was applied from ‘Sul-gue-jun’ of ‘Joo-yeok’ and ‘So-gang-jul’ from the Sung dynasty.
‘Bok-seo-jung-jong’(卜筮正宗) is a comprehensive text of ‘Yuk-hyo-hak’(六爻學). However, readers may only be able to understand the application of his work from the ’18 questions and answers’(十八問答) based on his theory and 131 examples of personal divination experiences.
‘So-gang-jul’ was the first man who made ’18 questions and answers’(十八問答) however his work lacked examples. In contratst to So-gang-jul’s work, ‘Wang-heung-seo’(王洪緖), applied many divination examples in the right context. Those examples have become useful even in today’s divination practices such as for disease, marriage, wealth, descendants, parents, promotion, examination, birth, eulogy and so on. However, there are also a few details that are missing such as information about people who requested for divination.
As an example, fortune telling for diseases require certain information from the patient such as age or if the disease is chronic or not. However, some details were lacking and only marks about myopathy or disease divination were present. Patients may have had the same disease, however there might have been varying conditions for younger or older patients. Also, a clear case to case distinction should have been included.
Moreover, a focus on the question and answer has led readers to wonder about the credibility and the exaggeration in the text. This points out that the book may serve as a reference point for many ‘Bok-seo’ books. (And there is actually a book made by ‘Ya-hak-no-in’(野鶴老人) who edited ‘Bok-seo-jung-jong’(卜筮正宗).
Indeed, Wang-heung-seo’s(王洪緖) achievement has become a great piece. I sincerely hope more books that cover practical divination examples like ‘Bok-seo-jung-jong’(卜筮正宗) could be produced. Furthermore, I wish readers to be able to evaluate their fortune through ‘Yukhyo-Jeom’(六爻占) as well.
