The purpose of this research was: to understand correlation and inter -influence between maternal emotional intelligence and parent self -efficacy, and to examine meaningful difference of maternal emotional intelligence and parent self-efficacy by number of children and regional difference.
In these regards, followings were set as the research subjects. First, can number of children and regional difference cause divergences of maternal emotional intelligence and parent self efficacy? Second, is there any interrelationship between maternal emotional intelligence and parent self-efficacy? Third, does maternal emotional intelligence have any effect on parent self- efficacy?
This research was based on the survey given to 535 mothers participated in parent education programs hosted by Seoul, Kyunggi, and Kangwon branches of KACE(Korea Association for Community Education). Promoting ‘creating a healthy family, an exciting school, and an active community’ campaign since 1969 local community movement, KACE is the organization which has been charge of a parent education enterprise. Of all 535 data, 495 data were used after excluding either unresponsive or dishonest ones.
To collect data, several questionnaire formats, including emotional intelligence scale, parent self-efficacy scale, and general information inquiry, were used in the survey. For the emotional intelligence scale and the parent self-efficacy scale, the self report test by Yong-lin Moon(1999), and Sook-jae Shin’s translated version of Gibaud-wallston and Wandersman(1978) PSOC(Parent Sense of Competence) were adopted.
The accumulated data were analyzed by SPSS 15.0 with descriptive statistics, correlation, multiple regression, and one-way anova as main methods.
Based on the process mentioned above, the consequences were as followed. First, while maternal emotional intelligence barely depended on number of children, parent self-efficacy hugely depended as the number increases. On the other hand, regional difference had influences on both maternal emotional intelligence and parent self-efficacy; with maternal emotional intelligence, Northern and Southern Seoul showed the most sensitive reaction toward maternal emotional intelligence, and with parent self- efficacy barely depended on regional defference. Second, notable correlation existed between maternal emotional intelligence and parent self-efficacy. Third, maternal emotional intelligence affected parent self-efficacy positively. In addition, the secondary factors of maternal emotional intelligence also had positive effects on the secondary factors of parent self-efficacy.
Finally, with the research, such conclusion can be extracted. First, as number of children increases, encountering more diverse children related experiences, a mother can improve the ability to predict the desirable development and behavior of her children, which allows her to have better perception of parent self efficacy. When it comes with the matter of regional difference on maternal emotional intelligence and parent self efficacy, big cities, where parents have higher educational fever, tend to have better understanding. Second, as a mother practices wiser application and control of emotional recognition and expression, her parent self efficacy is disposed to become more thorough. Third, when a mother’s emotional intelligence becomes higher, her confidence of being a better parent also increases. After all, maternal emotional intelligence has a considerable influence on parent self efficacy; thus, by improving her emotional intelligence, a mother can acquire assurance of her role as a parent, and eventually educate and foster her children better.
