The relationship between young children’s self-concept and pro-social behaviors
Early Childhood Education Seonhui Jo
Supervised by Professor Kyung-Hwa Lee
The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between young children’s self-concept and pro-social behaviors. Hence, the following research questions are addressed.
Research question 1. Is there a difference in children’s self-concept depending on their personal background (age, gender)?
Research question 2. Is there a difference in children’s pro-social behaviors depending on their personal background (age, gender)?
Research question 3. What correlation exists between children’s self-concept and pro-social behaviors?
Research question 4. Is there a difference in children’s pro-social behaviors (ability to control personal emotion, ability to for interpersonal relationship, ability to adapt to preschool life) depending on their level of self-concept?
The subjects for this study were 110 preschool children attending three different child care centers in G area, Seoul.
For test tools, ‘Early Childhood Self-concept Test’ by 이경화 and 고진영(2003) was used along with ‘Skill Situations Measure’ translated by 이원영, 박찬옥, and 노영희 (1993) from the original version by McGinnis and Goldstein (1990). Data collected were analyzed with SPSS 18.0 and to calculate t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient.
A summary of the results obtained in this study are as follows:
First, there was no difference in children’s self-concept depending on age or gender. Children’s self-concept did not show any significant change with such variables as age or gender. Four-year-old children on average scored higher than five-year-old children but the difference between these age groups was statistically insignificant. Girls scored higher than boys but the difference was statistically insignificant.
Second, there was no difference in children’s pro-social behaviors depending on age or gender. Children’s pro-social behaviors did not show any significant change with such variables as age or gender. Four-year-old children on average scored higher than five-year-olds but the difference between these age groups was statistically insignificant. Also, girls scored higher than boys but the difference was statistically insignificant.
Third, a close correlation was found between children’s self-concept and pro-social behaviors. Correlation r = in..268-682 level showed a relatively high positive correlation. This result indicates that there is a strong correlation between a child’s self-concept and his/her pro-social behaviors.
Fourth, differences in a child’s pro-social behaviors depending on his/her level of self-concept were statistically significant. In other words, pro-social behaviors vary depending on level of self-concept. Children whose level of self-concept is high will also score higher in pro-social behaviors.
In conclusion, as seen from the study, there is a close correlation between children’s self-concept and factors of pro-social behaviors. Therefore, this result is expected to promote instructions for self-concept and pro-social behaviors in early childhood education by investigating related variables that helps children adapt to social situations with confidence through fostering positive self-concept and pro-social behaviors.
