The purpose of this study was to grasp the coping method by elementary teachers toward students with important behavior issues perceived by the elementary teachers. With such purpose, the study established the following questions.
First, what important behavior issues do elementary teachers perceive in their students?
Second, what coping methods are practised by elementary teachers toward students with behavior issues?
The reason is based on two formal surveys, first, the survey investigated the importance of 64 questionnaire items with important behavior issue checklist(Kim Hyesook, Hwang Maehyang, 2009) by 106 elementary teachers in Incheon and Gyeonggi province.
In primary research, 31 items of behavior issues (got 4 points or above just as 'mostly yes') were chosen in three areas. The second survey investigated the coping method toward students with behavior issues by 100 elementary teachers.
The frequency analysis was used for important behavior issues. Through this, the following results were obtained.
As for behaviors issues related to learning, the teachers recognized that common traits, such as leaving the classroom during class, absence, and disturbing other students, have serious consequences on the students' ability to learn.
As for behaviors issues related to friendship, it was found among the teachers that inflicting physical and verbal abuse on their friends, and poor friendship were the most serious area of concern.
As for behaviors issues related to teacher relationship, teachers answered that disobeying teachers instructions, delinquent behaviors related to their ethical stance and moral conduct, especially challenging a teacher's authority, and inflicting physical and verbal abuse toward teachers themselves are serious problems.
Generally, looking at the common aspect of important behavior issues that the teachers recognised, it contained inflicting physical and verbal abuse on teachers themselves or friends, ignoring teachers instructions, challenging teacher's authority, serious ethics issues and interpersonal problems.
On the other hand, the teachers recognized that violation of the class rules and behavior issues relating to personality are not serious.
Next, the results of coping method by elementary teachers toward students with behavior issues were as follows.
First, the teachers thought the most effective coping methods on learning related to behavior issues are the verbal ways contained giving hints, scolding and one-to-one counseling.
Second, the teachers thought one-to-one counseling through the emotional influence to be the most effective coping method on friendship related behavior issues with threatening behavior toward other students. the others are request, scolding, and parental notification.
Third, the teachers thought the most effective coping methods are one-to-one counseling, parental notification, request, scolding on teacher relationship related behaviors issues.
Fourth, the teachers answered that requesting is the most commonly used practical coping method toward behavior issues.
Fifth, the teachers answered one-to-one counselling is the most effective way of five coping methods are commonly used at school.
Lastly, the teacher answered that the most essential practice required is to ensure enough hours of counselling for parents and students and connecting with professional counselors and support centers.
