This study performed a 12-week Korean dance exercise program for female high school students to find out its effects on their body composition and bone density. The subjects of this study included 24 female students from a high school located in K City, Jeollabuk-do, and the study divided them into an experimental group (n=12) and a control group (n=12). As for data analysis, the study conducted a paired t-test to verify the differences in average values of pre-test and post-test between the experimental group and the control group, whereas for the comparison test between the groups, it performed an independent sample t-test. The significance level of this study was p<.05 and the following results were obtained.
First, it has been found that after conducting a pre/post test of weight factors by applying the 12-week Korean dance exercise program, both groups tended to have an increase in weight. However, there were no significant differences before and after the exercise in them.
Second, it has been noted that after conducting a pre/post test of body mass index (BMI) by applying the 12-week Korean dance exercise program, both groups tended to have an increase in body mass index. However, there were no significant differences before and after the exercise in them.
Third, it has been shown that after conducting a pre/post test of body fat by applying the 12-week Korean dance exercise program, body fat tended to decrease in the experimental group while it tended to increase in the control group. Meanwhile, it has been demonstrated that there were significant differences (p<.05) before and after the exercise in the experimental group, while there were no significant differences in the control group.
Fourth, it has been confirmed that after conducting a pre/post test of waist-hip ratio (WHR) by applying the 12-week Korean dance exercise program, waist-hip ratio tended to decrease in the experimental group while it tended to increase in the control group. Meanwhile, it has been shown that there were significant differences (p<.05) before and after the exercise in the experimental group, while there were no significant differences in the control group.
Fifth, it has been noted that after conducting a pre/post test of bone density at OS calsis by applying the 12-week Korean dance exercise program, both groups tended to have an increase in bone density at OS calsis. Meanwhile, it has been shown that there were significant differences (p<.05) before and after the exercise in the experimental group, while there were no significant differences in the control group.
Seen from the results above, it has been suggested that the Korean dance exercise program used in this study could be used as a complex exercise program that could lead to a decrease in body fat and waist-hip ratio of female high school students, and to an increase in their fat free mass (FFM). It would be considered an effective exercise in the maintenance of their proper weight and the improvement of their bone density.
