The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between school children's Internet addiction and self-control, which has emerged as one of social problems in today's society that has rapidly turned into knowledge-based information society.
The subjects in this study were 480 students at two different elementary schools. 120 fourth graders(60 boys and 60 girls) and 160 sixth graders(60 boys and 60 girls) were selected from K elementary school in the city of S, and 120 fourth graders(60 boys and 60 girls) and 120 sixth graders(60 boys and 60 girls) were selected from Y elementary school in Y-gun. After a self-administered survey was conducted, the data from 455 students were analyzed except some answer sheets. Park Young-hee(2002)'s inventory(Cronbach's alpha=.88) was utilized to assess their Internet addiction on the basis of Young(2000)'s Internet Addiction Scale, and Nam Hyeon-mi(1999)'s Self-Control Inventory(Cronbach's alpha=.78) was employed to evaluate their self-control.
The collected data were analyzed with SPSS/WIN Ver. 11.0 program. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained, and then t-test was carried out to look for any possible gaps. A correlation analysis was implemented by calculating simple correlation coefficients(r) to determine the connection between Internet addiction and self-control .The findings of the study were as follows:
First, wether there were any gaps in self-control between the addict and nonaddict groups by gender was checked, and Internet addiction made a larger different to the self-control of the boys than that of the girls.
Second, whether there were any disparities in self-control between the addict and nonaddict groups by grade was investigated, and Internet addiction made a greater difference to the self-control of the fourth graders than that of the sixth ones.
Third, whether there were any gaps in self-control between the addict and nonaddict groups by academic standing was examined, and Internet addiction made a larger difference to the self-control of the students with intermediate and lower academic standing than that of those with high academic standing.
Fourth, whether there were any disparities in self-control between the addict and nonaddict groups by residential area was checked, and Internet addiction made a wider difference to the self-control of the urban students than that of rural students.
Fifth, as for correlation between Internet addiction and self-control, the two factors were far more correlated to each other in the addict group than in the nonaddict group. It lent credibility to the fact that there was a very close correlation between the level of Internet addiction and self-control.
In order to let school children stay away from Internet addiction, the followings are important:
First, they should not be allowed to have access to the Internet for more than a certain amount of time, and should be helped to find delight in workout or doing something for pleasure.
Second, every school should try to help students exercise self-restraint against the use of the Internet in various ways in collaboration with their families.
Third, each school should pay careful attention to the use of the Internet among students, and a variety of extracurricular programs should be developed to step up children's cognitive and emotional development to bolster their self-control.
Fourth, the movement or computer into an open space is required. Children should be helped not to be exposed to the Internet alone by placing their computers in an open place.
Fifth, every school and family should make concerted efforts from diverse perspectives to prepare special education programs geared toward overcoming the evil effects of the Internet.
