This study is on Note-taking Strategies, beliefs about Language Learning, Learning Strategies and their Influence on Achievement for Chinese Learners of Korean for Academic Purpose.
Although the percentage of foreign students is increased dramatically, at least half of foreign students quit school in South Korea due to insufficient Korean Language skills. One reason why foreign students quit school is because learner-centered education, even though it is essential, is not carried out in Korean Language Education. Won(2001) shows that Korean language learners use cognitive strategies far more than other language learners. Therefore, this study is focused on one of the cognitive strategies of Korean learners, note-taking strategies, because note-taking is one of the principal methods of learner-centered education and most skill of academic students.
For Chinese Korean learners, the education techniques they had experienced and their educational environment is rather different from those in Korea. Nevertheless, It is a fact that there has not been any study done on the area of Korean language education and there are only a few studies done on certain groups of Korean learners and their learning strategies. Thus, the researcher of this study attempted to identify Korean language learners' language learning strategies and beliefs about language learning, which is relatively influenced by language learning strategies through surveys; and examine the relationship amongst Korean learners' gender, age, the duration of Korean language study and their Korean proficiency.
As the main method of this research is based on the survey, it will help identify if there are any differences with regard to the factors such as gender, age, the duration of Korean language study, along with the correlation between Note-taking Strategies, beliefs about Language Learning, Learning Strategies and Korean proficiency. The subjects were as many as 160 Chinese students of various ethnicities attending universities and Korean language education centers throughout South Korea.
In spite of some limitations, this study is significant in terms of illustrating note-taking strategies, beliefs about Language Learning, Learning Strategies and their Influence on Achievement which were based on the survey for Chinese Korean learners for academic purposes.
