    Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find the effects of story-telling activities of old tales on children's linguistic ability and thinking skills.

The following research questions were established for the purpose.

    1. Did the story-telling activities influence children's linguistic ability(vocabulary acquisition, sentence structure, agreement with the contents, connection to the contents, express creatively)?

    2. Did the story-telling activities influence children's thinking skills(perceptual thinking, analytic thinking, overall thinking, reasoning)?

The subject of this study were 49 children aged 5(boys 21, girls: 28) who were assigned randomly at M kindergarten located in Busan. The objects consisted of an experimental group and a control group and they achieved similar scores in the pre-test of linguistic ability and thinking skills.
The instrument for measuring the effect of orally narrating old tales on children's linguistic ability was a linguistic test by Jang(1982) and the children's thinking skills were measured using a test by Blank, Rose and Beriin(1978) and「The Peabody Language Program」which was made by Dunn, Horton & Smith(1981), revised by Ju(1982), considering Korean children's development.

The data were drawn from a Paired Samples t-test, analyzing the pre-and post-test conducted. The results of this study are summed up as follows.

First, the score of all sub-factors in the linguistic ability test was significantly higher in the post-test than in the pre-test. This indicates that narrating old tales influences linguistic ability.
Second, the scores of the thinking skills test were significantly higher in the post-test than in the pre-test. This indicates that narrating old tales influence thinking skills.

The result of this study proved that the story-telling activities had a positive influence on children's linguistic ability and thinking skill.
