The purpose of this study was to compare the interrelationship among fan involvement, sponsor recognition, sponsor recognition and purchase intention of professional basketball's fans in Korea with results of previous studies and analyze the current sponsorship situation of S Team.
In order to achieve the purpose of this study, The convenience sampling method was adopted in this study. 235 questionnaires were distributed to S Team fans at Jamsil Stadium before the start of a KBL's basketball game as the fans entered the stadium from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Out of 235 questionnaires, 14 questionnaires were excluded from this study because they were neither complete nor reliable. The data process was done through frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis by using SPSS WIN 15.0.
The results from this study revealed that fans with high involvement have more positive attitude towards sponsors Samsung Thunders and higher purchase intention for the products produced by sponsors. And the results also showed that sponsor recognition affects attitude towards sponsors and purchase intention positively. However, the interrelationships between sponsor recognition and attitude towards sponsors, and between sponsor recognition and purchase intention were almost non existent for the S Team case, which is not congruent with results of previous studies, and which also means that S Team is not effectively exposing its current sponsors to its fans. Therefore, the team needs to create better strategies to increase sponsor recognition among fans.
