The Korean modern music education was very greatly influenced by Japan and we still receive such education under the influence of Japan, in school.
As national anthems and western military music band emerged with western civilization, western music started to wide-spread. At those times, modern music education was restricted but gained the ground.
While the Korean Governance Government under the Japanese Imperialism ruled over the Korean Peninsula, during the Japanese imperialists' occupation, music education was aimed at 'virtue cultivation' and 'spirituality cultivation ', on the surface. But, such education was ultimately aimed at 'loyalty cultivation as Japanese imperial subjects'. Given the fact, music education was made as one of colonial education means during the Japanese occupation. At those times, the music curriculum was determined by colonial political and administrative factors, to the most substantial extent.
In turbulent and urgent times after the liberation from the Japanese imperialists' occupation, syllabus-based music education aimed at completing good and pure character and nurturing aesthetic emotion through music under the premise of the educational ideology of ≪Humanitarianism≫, as the U. S. military government was governed. However, Japanese colonial music education still dominated the Korean society. Going back from those times, curriculum was greatly determined by socio-cultural and political and administrative factors, namely, the remaining pro-Japanese group, the educational control by the U. S. military government, and the Japanese education system, and elevated patriotism and tighter national security awareness.
The 1st~7th music curriculum dealt with contemporary music education, with the focus on 'beautiful emotion and favorable characterization', 'aesthetic music cultivation' and 'musical tone development' along with 'affluent emotion nourishment' and 'Music practice', under the influence of American music education. At those times, the Korean curriculum was influenced by western academic factors and a great deal of historic event and factor, without cease, such as the 'struggle taking place on April 19th 1960', 'military coup taking place on May 16th 1961, 'military dictatorship administration', 'Kwangjoo Democratic Movement' on May 18th 1980 and 'civilized administration', from the 1st Korean Republic Government until the incumbent government. Also, political and administrative factors had tremendous effects on the early stage of curriculum. As time passed, such factors came to have less tremendous effects on it. The increasing attention to the traditional arts made contributions to the rising socio-cultural factors.
Considering that the Korean curriculum failed to reflect Korean sentiment and future oriented-factors during the Japanese Imperialist colonization, not the 'Korean' but 'Japanese'-centered curriculum was conducted. Music curriculum was not exception. The Korean curriculum has, so far, been influenced by the Japanese colonial education. But, it needs to abolish the Japanese-styled education system and establish the true Korean-centered curriculum.
In this regard, this researcher analyzed factors to determine curriculum in academic, historic, socio-cultural, political and administrative factors. The analytic results of such curriculum factors show that such factors were influenced to a different extent according to each stage. Especially, political and administrative factors played a big role in the early curriculum stage when the very turbulent and unstable social and political trend appeared in Korea. But, such factors played a less big role to a noticeable degree, as the Korean economic and democratic system was developed and established.
