Light novel is one of the novel types which is famous for the original of animation in Japan. This study reviewed the light novel as media based on Marshall McLuhan's 'Understanding media', also analyzed consumption patterns and social backgrounds of light novel to know the aspects of modern Japanese society and pop culture.
There is an overview of the light novel in section two, focusing definitions and a brief history. After understanding various definitions and some features of the light novel, it finally defined light novel as ‘entertainment stories which share emotions of Otaku-culture, generally decorating covers with manga・anime style illustrations’. The light novel appeared in 1980s significantly, became famous by mixing with various media in 2000s.
You can see some narrative traits of the light novel in section three with Marshall McLuhan's concepts of hot and cool media. Furthermore, there will be some descriptions of the role and the meaning that illustrations have. It is not function as novel which is just written by letters, but the light novel is the cool media that mixed up with sub-cultural media and manga・anime style illustration. When readers read the light novel, they do not understand only by the words, but understand by characters in illustrations, through the voices of anime and also by overlapping with other media-mixed images. However, if we do not have any sub-cultural knowledge, we cannot understand these kinds of cool media well.
Verifying the idea of consumption that Hiroki Azuma said, the acceptance forms of readers were analyzed in section four. Firstly, this study reviewed how the main readership of the light novel, third generation of male Otakus, appeared in Japanese society. In addition, there will be some reviews of social and environmental changes. Originally, Otaku was the group which named by other people, had their own pride in their first generation but was persecuted socially in their second generation. Thus, it has been continue to the third generation. There are special features of Otakus that they still stay in their inner-world of victimization, despite they became some subjects of academic discussions and be positively reproduced.
Then we can confirm the dual narrative structure of the light novel. In 2000s, three light novels which was popular to Moe,『The Familiar of Zero』,『Shakugan no Shana』and『Haruhi Suzumiya』, showed two zones which reflected reality and readers' wishes.
In addition, through the second creation, readers tend to consume by enlarging the fantasy instead reducing the reality. Readers of the light novel, who are discriminated from society, show this kind of consumption pattern to console by themselves. It is in contrast with readers of modern literature, who try to read authors' ideas or views through the books. It is consumption like a mirror that readers look at themselves in the books, they think there are their inner worlds in the books. It is a grand narratives that the post-modern society has.
The third generation of Otakus have stronger self-pities than the previous ones, and they are easy to be confined in their own world due to social and environmental changes. These trends were intensified in 2000s, the light novel got noticed. It was the time that narrative of the light novel appeared as reality and fantasy combination. Moreover, light novels were easy to share with other sub-cultures such as manga・anime・games. Also they had closed character so it was fitted with Otakus in third generation. The dual narrative of the light novels reborn through the media-mix, the consumption was repeated by readers' second creation by enlarging their fantasy. This phenomenon presents the post-modern society that has differentiated society and personalized consuming patterns. This study can give you some clues to understand Japanese modern society which is becoming a closed group or being personalized more and more.
