The purpose of this study is to identify the causal relationship among professionalism, market orientation, and job attitudes of Human Resource Development(HRD) practitioners. In order to examine the causal relationship among research variables, the following research goals were established to: 1) identify the impact of professionalism on market orientation; 2) identify the impact of professionalism on job attitudes; and 3) identify the impact of market orientation on job attitudes.
Structured equation modeling methods are used to examine data collected from HRD practitioners in companies and public organizations. In total, 203 HRD practitioners participated in this study.
The findings indicate the following relationships: professionalism has positive influence on market orientation; professionalism has positive influence on job attitudes; and market orientation does not influence job attitudes.
The results of this study are as follows: 1) the professionalism of HRD practitioners has to be improved in order to increase market orientation which can provide learners with superior value; 2) the professionalism of HRD practitioners has to be improved in order to increase organizational commitment and job satisfaction; and 3) an organization has to provide systematic training and development program for HRD practitioners in order to gain a new insight and understanding of market orientation.
Theocratical and managerial implications of this research were discussed as follows: 1) this study integrated professionalism in occupational sociology and market orientation in the marketing field with job attitude; 2) previous research has been expanded to professionalism from existing research of roles, competency, and expertise of HRD practitioners; 3) this study contributed to the expansion of HRD research by dealing with the empirical study of marketing for the shared vision and belief of the "learners first" organizational culture; 4) HRD practitioners should be encouraged to have a high level of professionalism, so that their level of market orientation, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction; 5) alternative value might be appropriate for the practitioners who pursue professionalism because market orientation challenges some aspects of professionalism, especially in job autonomy; and 6) the values, norms, and characteristics of an organization have to be considered in order to create market-oriented organizational culture since market orientation reflects aspects of strategy and organizational culture and cannot guarantee success within a short period time.
