This study examined the influence of class teacher's leadership upon adolescent's citizenship and analyzed which leadership was effective for the adolescent's cultivation of citizenship. The ultimate purpose of this study was to make teachers take interest in the guidance of adolescents in actual site of education and present the clue that was helpful for adolescent's cultivation of citizenship.
Study subjects were 403 high school students (237 boys and 166 girls) at two high schools in Seoul area and they were sampled with a random sampling method. Survey was carried out with self-reporting questionnaires. In order to find out the level of adolescent's citizenship according to their demographic features, t-test and one-way ANOVA were carried out. In order to examine the correlations between teacher's leadership variables and adolescent's citizenship variables, Pearson's correlation analysis was carried out. In addition, in order to examine the influence of teacher's leadership variables upon adolescent's citizenship, hierarchical multiple regression analysis was carried out.
Study findings are as follows:
First, all the teacher's leadership had positive influence upon adolescent's citizenship. In particular, teacher's leadership highly correlated with such a sub-variable of adolescent's citizenship as community consciousness.
Second, among the sub-variables of teacher's charisma leadership, the ideally influential behavior variable relatively highly correlated with the community consciousness of adolescent's citizenship. On the other hand, among the sub-variables of teacher's servant leadership, the vision presentation variable relatively highly correlated with the community consciousness of adolescent's citizenship.
Third, teacher's leadership, perceived by adolescents, had significant influence upon adolescent's citizenship. The variance persuasive power of teacher's charisma leadership in adolescent's citizenship, of which demographic features were controlled, was 24.2% and it was significant. The variance persuasive power of teacher's servant leadership was 25.4% and it was significant as well.
Fourth, among the sub-variables of teacher's charisma leadership, the inspirational motivation variable had significant influence upon adolescent's citizenship. On the other hand, among the sub-variables of teacher's servant leadership, the vision presentation variable had significant influence upon adolescent's citizenship.
Fifth, the most influential demographic feature upon the level of adolescent's citizenship was the level of communication with parents on political and social issues (r=8.859, p<.001) and it had significant influence upon such sub-variables of adolescent's citizenship as the consciousness of participation and autonomy.
Based on above study findings, the investigator presents following suggestions:
First, proper exertion of teacher's leadership is very important for adolescent's growing-up to a good citizen. Since teacher's leadership contributes relatively much to the cultivation of community consciousness of adolescent's citizenship, the exertion of leadership seems to be very valuable in adolescent's cultivation of citizenly capability as a member of community.
Second, teachers' motivation of adolescents by concretely commending their efforts and presenting satisfaction with it (charisma leadership's inspirational motivation) seems to be very helpful for adolescent's cultivation of citizenship. In addition, teachers' making adolescents learn from diverse areas and carry out various activities by attaching weight to their potential of growth in the future and respecting their personality (servant leadership's vision presentation) seems to be very helpful for adolescent's cultivation of citizenship.
Third, it is necessary for parents not to put values in adolescents' personal performance of schoolwork only but to frequently carry out communication with them on the issues of politics and society in general, thus encouraging them to grow up good citizens.
In conclusion, study findings showed that class teacher's charisma leadership and servant leadership had significant influence upon adolescents' citizenship. However, this study had limitation in that study population was limited and measuring scale was the one that was conventionally used in the study on business entities in general. The investigator hopes many follow-up studies will be carried out with a variety of study populations and a measuring scale that is appropriate for the science of adolescent will be developed in the future.
