The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of VanPatten's processing instruction when applying and practicing of irregular predicate in Korean language. Processing instruction, compared to the traditional instruction focusing on production task, is better known as one of the effective method which improves learner's grammar acquisition through structured input activity.
This study takes irregular predicate in Korean language, especially ‘ㅡ’, ‘ㄹ’, ‘ㄷ’, as target features, and observes the effect of processing instruction and traditional instruction on acquisition of these three predicate.
There are two main hypotheses of this study when researching. First, the processing instruction will show significant improvement than the traditional instruction, especially in learner's comprehensive understanding and production tasks of irregular terms. Second, the processing instruction will show a continuous increasing curve when comparing after a certain period of time.
The target features were chosen three of Korean irregular predicate ‘ㅡ’, ‘ㄹ’ and ‘ㄷ’ , also 19 Korean learners in the beginning level, dividing into two groups as the treatment and the control, were the participants to be verified the upper hypotheses. All the subjects were taken pre- and post- tests consisting the two types of tasks, equally.
In the results of this study, processing instruction showed greatly improved comprehensive understanding and interpretation task than traditional instruction group's, and even in case of the production task had similar improvement. In other words, processing instruction is more effective approach to grammar instruction than traditional instruction. These results read us to agree with the hypotheses and support the previous studies.
Through this study, significant results were verified that not only processing instruction on Korean teaching had effects on language teaching, especially when teaching Korean irregular predicate, but also this can be another applicable and practical teaching approach on Korean grammar teaching hereafter.
